There is this random free channel on Hulu called FilmRise that has the whole original series. It has atrociously timed commercial breaks* (like mid-sentence breaks, but it backs up a few seconds when it returns so you can see the whole scene). I've been binging it for the last couple weeks while working. *It broke up "Becky.cut.the.cheese"!!!! Blasphemy to break up one of the greatest line deliveries of all time. As I’ve said upthread I’m a big fan of the original Roseanne. But this was the right choice. My personal opinion is that Roseanne was always the weakest link on the show. Dan and Jackie are incredible characters and I’m so sorry I won’t see John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf on the show anymore. Edited to add that John Goodman never won an Emmy for his work on the show, and that’s a damn shame. While Goodman and Metcalf are amazing, I feel that Roseanne held her own with them. The three of them had genuine chemistry and she really doesn't stand out to me as weaker. Especially in light of her being such a garbage person IRL, her acting skills must be better than she's ever given credit for, because she was able to give a layered performance where the good qualities outweighed the bad most of the time. I don't understand where this came from either. Like, was this just a completely out of left field jab at a random public figure? I sure hope it was worth it to her. Blowing up a whole bunch of people's lives, including your own, for the sake of making a [racist, not funny] "joke" on Twitter? Okay then...

I'm waiting for the social media coordinator at Ambien HQ to respond with something snarky about this, since they're trending right now. I've already read some truly hilarious tweets about what people have done while hopped up on Ambien. Their response is here. (Basically, "Racism is not a known side effect of our medications"). I like it because it sounds like a standard corporation response, but with an underlying layer of shade.

Roseanne has also been pulled from syndication by multiple networks. (I'm not sure where the LAFF network intends to do.) That will hurt the minor actors from the first series quite a bit. Michael Fishman and Lecy Goranson and that woman that played Crystal are probably living on that money.
I'm curious as to whether it will return to syndication like the Cosby Show did.

Obviously everybody has different opinions, but I enjoyed the old series in spite of Roseanne. Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman always reminded me of Fred Astaire dancing with the hat stand. They made her look better than she was.
(Have I ever mentioned that John Goodman walked right past me in Las Vegas once? He was leaving Tom Colicchio's Craftsteak in the MGM Grand. If you ever get the chance to eat there, save up two weeks pay and do it!)

I still like the idea of Roseanne dying off screen and the rest of the cast taking over. I know it won't happen but it would have been nice to have that option. I would have loved to see the show focus on the original 3 kids and their lives and Jackie's as well. Darlene as the matriarch would be great.

. The episode where Roseanne is gone the whole time visiting her parents while Jackie and Dan are at home bonding was a warning shot. It didn't work because Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman stuck by Roseanne and said they wouldn't continue without her. . [ And interestingly, I haven’t seen or heard a comment from either Metcalf or Goodman. I find that a bit disturbing to be honest and I’m starting to give them the side eye. Who the hell sits on their hands and says nothing in a situation like this?

I wasn't that crazy about the revival to begin with and haven't thought the episodes were very good, so I definitely am not on board with trying to cobble together a show without the title character. Sara Gilbert's acting as an adult has been fairly terrible, IMO, and whatever talent Lecy Goranson had was left back in the 90s. Michael Fishman was never a strong part of the show and without the cute little boy factor, he probably brings even less. John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are both successful enough in other areas that I couldn't see them sticking around in a floundering new show. The cancellation doesn't bum me out too much, it was such a stilted version of the original. And since this show started when I was 9 and my parents were around Dan/Roseanne's age, I sometimes found it hard to watch old Dan/Roseanne without feeling sad about real life stuff. Old Will and Grace is problematic for me too, but in a very different, less personal way. I wish they'd just go back to making new shows and stop with the revivals. Murphy Brown is up next and I'm not looking forward to that at all, despite loving the original.

I wonder if Roseanne 'owns' the characters, so that's why they had to cancel rather than just fire her?

I am fairly sure Roseanne at least partially owns all of the characters. Not having seen any of the reboot, I do think she held her own against Goodman and Metcalf in the original.
I'm not sure what the cast is expected to say. Roseanne has always been crazy. The fact that she is now crazy and openly racist is the problem. They weighted the almighty dollar to tolerate that and lost.

I guess we don't need to feel too sorry for Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf or John Goodman. The Hollywood Reporter says ABC has to pay them their $350,000 per episode for next season regardless of the show's cancellation. They were each paid $250,000 per episode this season.
Some of the writing staff are also supposed to be paid for most of next season. Some lawyers might have to get involved in order to get ABC to pay though.
