In addition to the hay, the big Hildi felony I remember was when she stuck the vinyl records to the wall. I swear some episodes the designers worked like they were getting paid per square inch of ugly. The egg was probably my least favorite Hildi room. And that's saying a lot. She did some truly awful things.

Someone stated on the AVClub thread that they renovated a room with wine bottle labels.... for teetotalers.....
That can't be true, is it?

Someone stated on the AVClub thread that they renovated a room with wine bottle labels.... for teetotalers..... That can't be true, is it? It was completely true. There was merlot colored paint, wine labels, I think cork was involved. IIRC, the design was fine, even desirable, and on-trend for ca 1999, for a oenophile. I haven't been able to find a picture of it.

Someone stated on the AVClub thread that they renovated a room with wine bottle labels.... for teetotalers..... Yes, that's true. It was Hildi again - the homeowner didn't drink, and Hildi covered his kitchen walls with wine labels. Hildi also did a bathroom where she covered the walls with silk flowers - stapled on, no less. I stopped watching the show in the later seasons, because it seemed like Hildi and Doug, especially, were seeing how awful they could be on $1,000. I remember someone on TWOP saying that at least they couldn't do too much damage for $1,000 - those people have never had to refinish a hardwood floor that's been painted (which Hildi did). I can't remember the name of the designer (and I quick Google search doesn't tell me), but there was the woman designer from the south who had two compulsions: she removed all ceiling fans, even when decorating homes in hot climates, and she always used yellow.

I think that was Laurie Smith--she had some interesting designs that sort of hugged a preppy/mod boundary. But the ceiling fan thing was utterly baffling, doubly so upon learning she was from Mississippi.

I think that was Laurie Smith Laurie! Yes, that's it! Thanks, that was kind of driving me buggy. She was also obsessed with symmetry.

They also had an obsession with hiding the tv, although lots of design shows would do that. Which seems lacking in self-awareness for a tv show.
Re: Laurie and the ceiling fans. She hated those tacky fans with the fake wicker trim on the wood veneer blades and the amber-tinted tulip lights. Which were almost the only ceiling fans out there back in the day. In the TS marathon, she left a fan that was more sleek and stylish, the kind you see a lot more now.
I remember Doug and Hildy doing rooms for homeowners who were superfans and were giddy about working with their idols and getting a room decorated by them. But Doug and Hi,day conspired to do one room in all black and the other in all, white, and the homeowners were devastated. It's like Doug and Hildy just stomped on their hearts.
Although when I think about it, the homeowners would have helped create the all-white or all-black room for their friends, so it shouldn't have been a shock to receive one. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

Yep, they showed half of that story on the reunion the other night. The guys who got the white room were PISSED and got rid of it ASAP, but they didn't show an update with the people who got the black room. All I could think was, "Wait, why was it okay to give your friends an all-one color room then??"

Vern did a kitchen once, that I loved, where he cut out the centers of the cabinets then replaced them with glass, that he'd painted or stain glassed somehow. I'm sure now it looks dated, but at the time for 1000.00 it looked gorgeous.
