So unsettling. I read the book a few weeks back in anticipation of the series. And the show is just as unsettling. They seemed to have aged up Amma (for obvious reasons), and upped Camille's alcoholism. I think the flashes of memory from Camille's childhood are very effective. The entire episode I had a knot in my stomach. The near constant background hum is unnerving. The soundtrack and score are helping to generate the feeling of unease. I really enjoyed Big Little Lies from the same director. And so far, this feels like an even darker version of that. There are no weak links in this cast. I felt Shailene was the weakest link on BLL, but she did a serviceable job there. I can't wait for the second chapter of that series. I wish HBO released entire series at once like Netflix. This is totally a show I'd want to binge watch.

Big trigger warning for self-harm, suicidal thoughts, abuse, etc. I read the book a while ago and watched the series premiere last night and I agree it's very good, and highly unsettling. There is a feeling of dread from the very start. The flashbacks are really effective. The younger actress playing Camille (Beverly from It) is like a mini clone of Amy Adams. Not liking Chris Messina as the KC detective. He's boring as all heck, and I pictured a midwestern, John Krasinski-type while I was reading the book. Pretty much all the other casting is spot on. I expected Camille's body scars to be more noticeable, though. I did see the scar highlighted while she was in the bath, but the way the book made it sound, every inch of her was covered with a scar of some kind and that's why she wears jeans and long sleeves all the time. And I'm already freaked out by the doll house.

I watched last night and it definitely has that awful, foreboding creepy vibe the book had. Atmospherically, it's spot on. And man if Sophia Lillis isn't the spit of Amy Adams--great casting there.
Agree with what ladybug mentioned in her spoilers. I actually had to pause that scene to get the full effect, which is not how that aspect of the character was portrayed in the book.

Haven't read the book. Need to say that up front. The constant trailers for this are wearing thin for me. It has all the people I like in it. But I don't know...I may try it based on what you all are saying here. I like dark

It's like Big Little Lies combined with True Detective, without all the metaphysical "time is a flat circle" stuff. It's more atmospheric than plot driven, but there is a plot. Something terrible happened and by the end of the book/series, you will know whodunit.

Wow. I think I've spotted only three or four of all those. I haven't read the book and haven't watched episode three yet, and while I am enjoying it I also kinda want more traction on the murder mystery (I know this is primarily about Camille, but I'm like, "Who's the killer?!"). Visually this show is great. I love the green painted wall in her mother's house. I like the candle holder on Camille's desk (it's nothing special, but loved it enough to find one on Etsy), though I wonder why she's got a candle burning in her room at all times and I wonder if it is even real most of the time.

I caught a few of the hidden words in the first 2 episodes. The highway billboard threw me for a loop, and I had to rewind. Then I started looking for more of them and noticing the words changing. I didn't see any in the latest episode (#3). I was too unnerved by everything else. I can watch horror movies all day, everyday and not blink. But realistic, real world body horror? Nope, nope, NOPE! I've been watching through my fingers. I knew the bathroom toilet screw scene was coming, but still almost vomited when it came. Same nervous pit, and watching through my fingers happens whenever Camille gets a paperclip or needle. BTW, I read the book, so I know who the killer is, I just can't figure out if it's obvious or not. It's leaping off the screen to me. I wish I'd have gone in blind now.

Book reader here. Mr. Ladybug correctly guessed the killer by the 2nd episode and he did not read it. I think it might be obvious.

I am looking forward to the show each week, but as someone who hasn't read the book, it feels a little impenetrable. The acting is amazing and I'm basically watching for the character interactions and the atmospheric shots. When the story is ostensibly focused on the murder, I'm always thinking this doesn't feel like it's about the murder. When the story is focused Camille, it feels a little distant then, to me, too. Based on what people have posted here and in other places, it seems like having read the book gives you a leg up on processing the story. {Spoiler}(Unfortunately, I read a perfectly vague reference about the dollhouse and fear I may know more than I wanted to know ) Personally, the time jumps are too disorienting for me. I feel like they are actually doing the story a disservice. I read that they aren't nearly as frequent in the book. I've also read some people say that they wonder how the mystery will be stretched for 8 episodes and that fewer eps would have made more sense. That makes me suspect that the time jumps are, at least partially, about padding an otherwise straightforward mystery. Ladybug's post about her husband reinforces that suspicion.
