I watched the first episode of Miss Fischer's Modern Mysteries. It takes place in the 1960s after Phyrne Fischer goes missing in New Guinea and is presumed dead. I was prepared to not like it, but I did. Phryne's niece, Peregrine Fischer is winsome, and the supporting characters are such that I could stick around for all for mini-movies.
I caught it on Couchtuner, but it airs on channel 7 in Australia. No idea if it's coming to Netflix.

I watched Abducted in Plain Sight last night and just couldn’t stop saying oh my God at the stupidity of these people. Her parents were both stupid and pliable (thanks to their rural LDS upbringing). The dad is gay and has been repressing it for so long that it made him an easy mark. The mom was also easy because she was craving attention from a man who is not gay. I totally follow and agree that her dad was gay and B was astute enough to pick up that and weaponize it.

I originally thought it was the MF movie that they just filmed, but this is more like a spinoff. I'm excited about the movie too. Phyrne and Jack forever!

I actually really loved PEN15. It was weird at first to watch two adults play 13 year olds and be around actual 13 year olds, but I got over it pretty quick once the bowl haircut appeared.
My friend only watched the first episode and didn't like it. I made him watch the AOL episode before he gave up on the series and now he's back to watching all the episodes again.
There were multiple times I would be irritated with the leads, but then I had to remember, what 13 year old wasn't irritating at some point in time? I think I was a little more lenient with the show because it did tackle some racism in it. I especially related to the fact that Maya didn't even realize that some of the snubs she was getting was because she was half Japanese.
I thought the show did a great job of those awkward years. From Anna constantly pulling on her 2 strands of hair to the thong episode, and you, as a viewer, being able to laugh at yourself for going through that.

I watched the entire season of The Umbrella Academy. Since I've never heard of or read the comic series this is based on, I can't say whether this was close to the material or not. It's not bad; I liked the weirdness of it all, a bit like Heroes season 1 meets Misfits (fittingly, Robert Sheehan is in this too and his power is again death-related). But: I'm usually the worst at correctly predicting twists and turns in a story. Here, I was able to guess every single one. That's how obvious it was where certain character's stories were going. I was glad to see that Ellen Page has got top billing and an important role in this, but...her acting in the last two episodes, when the action really kicks in, is kind of bad.

Ellen was just plain bad in the role. I get she's supposed to be "nothing special" but it was like she was half asleep. Every time she appeared on screen I fast forwarded.

Yeah, I think it takes 2-3 episodes for PEN15 to sort of lock in, and you get what it’s about. And they do capture the sort of awfulness of being 13 pretty perfectly. And the episode where Maya realizes the racism at play is heartbreaking (though there are signs she was already aware of it at some level). Like when she screams about being “barely” Japanese, which upsets her Japanese mother. And then Anna’s completely hare-brained scheme to solve racism. I mostly enjoyed The Umbrella Academy too, though it had some pacing problems (typical Netflix bloat). Some of the characters worked really well (Five, Klaus, and the Hazel and Cha-Cha). Some...not so much. Allison, who is supposed to be a world-famous movie star, was pretty dull. She should have had, like, Pretty Woman-era Julia Roberts magnetism (especially considering her powers).

She went from a monotone half-whisper at the beginning to full-on screaming and over-emoting towards the end. It really pains me to write this because I usually love Ellen :-( Five and Klaus were my favorites. Cha-Cha and Hazel had too many scenes for the kind of characters they were so they went a bit on my nerves after a while. And I can overlook a lot in parallel worlds like this one. But they all were adopted by this old guy. They all referred to each other as their brothers and sisters. Allison told her daughter about her "Uncle Luther"....and nobody minds that two of them are in love ? It's just....a thing?

I love Five. That kid is an amazing actor! And Klaus is hilarious and sexy.
