Those reports are really conflating two issues. The fires in a specific area (near Port Macquarie) have been really bad for the local population, but the bigger ongoing nationwide problem is land clearing, urban expansion, and climate change. So this is more of a "we should be doing something about this" call to action, rather than "there's nothing we can do".

Also, don't the koalas all have chlamydia now? The cutest marsupials have a lot working against them.

That’s true—for me, personally, this is partially what I meant by intellectualizong the issue and looking at the parts of it. Thanks for putting this so clearly.

Does anyone have resources about how to recycle food squeeze pouches? My kid has special needs that manifest in food rigidity, including wanting only a certain brand of purees in commercial food squeeze pouches. Reusable, refillable pouches won't work. My local organic market stopped collecting them and I am looking for alternatives. The long-term option is obviously to stop using them, which is our goal and we are seeking specialists to help with that (for more than just environmental reasons). Is TerraCycle legit? TerraCycle partners with companies to recycle otherwise unrecyclable products, including several manufacturers of squeeze pouches. TerraCycle has been accused of greenwashing by critics who say that it's not encouraging companies to reduce use of unrecyclable packaging at all and for another, unrelated program where it sells consumer products with supposedly recyclable packaging that otherwise wouldn't be. For the first point, it's a fair point but my family would be a consumer of such products even if TerraCycle didn't exist. The food squeeze pouches LO uses aren't available in the second program. Any thoughts?

I know all of Australia has been effected by the fires in a ton of different ways, but the devastating hit the unique Australian wildlife population has and is taking is just awful.

Unreal. The pictures literally look like hell on earth.
Re Terracycle, I'm pretty sure it's a legit company. I've sent stuff to them. And they are local to me, so I know they do good stuff in the community. I have not read the criticism, though, so I can't speak to that.

I just heard on the radio that N.J. is unlikely to get any snow in all of February. If that comes to pass, it will be only the 9th time in the history of weather record-keeping. It's just sad.

However, it does validate my laziness in not purchasing a replacement snow shovel when mine broke. See also, not getting my middle child snow boots that fit this season. (Laziness/forgetfulness, not climate-related behavior.)
