Unmitigated trash. This might as well have been a cartoon--the characters, circumstances, and dialogue were so unrealistic. I guess they thought this was going to be ground breaking and a look into the lives of Generation Z. But wasn't even remotely close. A complete embarrassment.

In the little chat between Zendaya and the show’s creator after the show she said something like “I wanted to do a show that would allow older generations to feel empathy for kids today.” Clearly didn’t work on this old hag because when the episode ended I just thought to myself, “These kids are turds.” I felt empathy for Zendaya’s little sister, but that’s about it.

It was so over-the-top that it became unrealistic. I understand that many teenagers are dealing with these issues, but they ratcheted every single one up to an 11 and compressed basically every negative issue into one episode full of characters we spend about 5 minutes with (except Zendaya). Substance abuse, self-destructiveness, sexual assault, fat shaming, slut shaming, transphobia, mental health, revenge porn, self-harm, addiction, what am I forgetting? It's a very nihilistic portrait of adolescence.
The clip that really got me was her sister discovering her after ODing.

Double post, sorry.
I tried watching it last night, but I just kept having to change the channel because it was too much. I have always had a problem watching people in movies/tv doing hard drugs, so seeing Rue trying to snort lines in a bathroom stall, strung out on Fentanyl , seeing her OD . . . I just couldn't watch it. The fight with her mom was also scary as hell.
I don't know if there's any point to this show besides just shocking people.

I really want to like this show but the characters are assholes, even Zendaya's character. And this isn't "dark" like The Handmaid's Tale is dark, this is just stupid. The characters all need some type of help.
I tuned into this show because one of the actors ended up quitting the show because even his character was too much for him. And I get it now. I'm mainly watching to see which storyline of his character forced him to quit.

I watched the second episode, and it was slightly less horrific than the first. I still can't get over the cartoonish storylines and dialogue, but the acting is sometimes tolerable. The girl playing Rue's sister is interesting. I pray she doesn't go down the same path. Rue's drug dealer/friend was also interesting. He reminded me of the later rap star Mac Miller, and that was kinda distracting. He looked and sounded a lot like him. Seeing his little brother caught up in the life at such a young age was severely distressing. I predict he will kill someone, or be killed before the season is over.
The rest is just ridiculous. None of the other characters make a lick of sense. 'Roid rage super-jock is hyper masculine to repress his gay tendencies as he slowly turns into his dad? Mkay. When he broke into Tyler's apartment, I was 90% sure he was going to rape him, especially since the show deemed it necessary to show him watching his dad's sexcapades in the opening scene. And now he's texting his daddy's jailbait slam-piece. Wow. I wonder will this end in a tragedy when all sides meet up and realize how they're all connected.
I have no idea how the Kat storyline is supposed to be perceived. She has extremely low self-esteem, and seemed to be upset at being taped. Now she's embracing the "slut" label, and going to start doing webcam shows. I guess we're supposed to think she's getting an artificial ego boost by performing for strangers that accept her the way she is online. I didn't find the way she handled the denial to the principal funny or clever. All I could think is, "wouldn't they have called her parents/guardians?" Same with Rue when she tricked the guy into handling her sign-in sheet. She propositions the guy, then calls him and perv, and then smirks and walks away. I didn't find her funny or clever either. Sure he's a loser, but she's not a good person either.
And the worst storyline is the cheerleader and her black boyfriend. I mean...that's just exploitation. There's nothing there. It's just an excuse to be vulgar. I guess they're writing him as being multi-layered, and not just being a walking hormone. He likes the chick (can't remember her name) for some odd reason, but she's just the ultra horny teenage nympho that wants to please him. She "jokingly" said they should kill the coach that won't play him. So I'm sure that means she'll either seduce or actually kill the coach by the end of the season. She's barely concept, yet alone a fleshed out and fully realized character. I still can't get over the absolutely ridiculous line from the first episode, "I'm sorry I'm so wet. Does that bother you?" said with a straight face, and with what's supposed to be actual shame/embarrassment. That finally dethrones the "Bad pussy" line from GoT that wins the worst words ever uttered on HBO award.
I have no desire to continue watching. I'll probably end up reading the wiki for recaps to see if my predictions come true.

sad to see these reviews. I had ear-marked this show to watch with my 20yr old son since it's sort of his demographic. But we will proceed with caution.

I started watching because I am in love with Zendaya and am now hate watching. Don't understand who the audience is for this show. One reviewer called out the David Fincher/Gaspar Noe visuals and that's dead on. Now it's just funny. "I just dry humped a carousel pole and everyone's staring at me, maybe I shouldn't do Molly again?" That's some comedy gold right there. And what is up with the girls and their weird eyeliner? I don't see that IRL.

The plot involving Jules and Nate is keeping me interested. I was legit scared for her meeting up with him and thought he was going to kill her. Nate is psycho. I knew he was just setting her up and not really falling for her! PSYCHO!

I was 1000% sure someone was going to die in the last episode. Nate killing Jules and/or Maddie. Still not sure that it won't happen. Or Nate's dad killing Jules or Rue. Or Gia ODing. Something like that has to happen before the season is over. I'm with Wol-- I have no idea who the target audience is supposed to be. I really can't see this as a show parents and tweens/teens sit and watch together. The visuals are decent. They're obviously going for a trippy and artistic slant inspired by the directors previously mentioned. I am just watching for completion at this point. Same with Big Little Lies. It's Sunday and nothing else is on. I just watch to see what's going to be the most graphic, outlandish, cartoonish, and unrealistic scene of the night. None of the kids they're following are particularly likable or realistic. Anytime I find myself even remotely sympathetic towards a character, they do something tragically dumb, and erase all the good will the show was building. I'm rooting for Fezco and his little brother. Maybe Gia. That's it. As for the rest: Rue and Jules will end tragically. Kat's stupidity will end in tragedy. I really hope she's using condoms. She has a perfectly nice boy digging on her, and she can't see it. Nate will kill someone or die or both, before the season is over. Cassie is the tragic nympho. "She's not bad, she's just built that way." Maddie. Seriously, what the fuck is she supposed to be other than a blowup doll. I guess she's getting the backstory opening next week, but I just don't care. Why try to humanize her at this point? You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. Not that she deserves to be abused/choked. She needs to dump Nate and move on. He is obviously psycho, and he can snap her in two like a toothpick. And that outfit? Jesus. For a school carnival? Why taunt the bull. I can already guess that she finds personal value in how others judge her (i.e. her looks), but this is too on the nose. I can't wait to hear the voice over from Rue about how in 2019, girls have to dress like the thots on Instagram. It's just how things are. Nudes are love currency, and thot wear is...well I guess I'll find out next week. Please watch and report back. He's closer to the demo that they're reaching for, and he is recently post high school, so maybe he can relate to and identify with the characters. I'd love to see a take from people of that age. I'm apparently too old for this show. I remember high school being rough, but not on this level. Everything and everyone is turned up to a 12. Youtube has the first episode up if you want to get a sneak preview before watching with him. Graphic everything abounds.
