My dad’s two favorite bands are The Beach Boys and Monkees, and I knew who Nesmith was before the Monkees’ resurgence in the mid 80s. This is a true loss, especially for my family! His songs were often my favorites; “Listen to the Band” is sublime.

I've been a Monkees fan for a long time. I saw their TV show in re-runs and loved the humour but their music was even better than the series. It makes me sad that they struggled to be seen as musicians for so long, especially as Mike and Peter were accomplished musicians before The Monkees. Oddly enough, my favourite Mike song wasn't written by him but he took lead vocals on it. What am I Doing Hangin' Round?I also love this one: Just a Little Love.Godspeed, sir.

I've always preferred the songs Micky Dolenz sang lead on (I'm A Believer is pure gold), but I still loved most of what The Monkees did. It's so sad to think that we've already lost three of them. RIP Mike.

When people sneer about the Monkees being a prefab band, I like to point out that the Monkees and the Beach Boys same band, really. Wrecking Crew. Just that one had a single genius writing the songs (Brian), and the other a team of geni-i (Neil Diamond, Carole King & Jerry Goffin, John Stewart, Boyce and Hart) writing for them. ETA: when my friends in Tin Huey did their album for Warner Bros in 1978, the label insisted they do one cover fir a single, so they did a remake of Robert Wyatt’s version of I’m a Believer. They hired the same background singers that were on the Monkees version for the big chorus at the end. BTW, that giant Bass Saxophone Ralph Carney is holding is the one he played the BoJack Horseman theme on.

Every woman I know who is a Monkees fan loved Mike the best. You aren't wrong on that front for me. It was a tie between him and Mickey. Mike was dry wit funny and Mickey was the boisterous funny one.
