I think another think that distinguishes Dolly is her overwhelming gratitude for her success and her fans. She grew up super poor--I think having shoes was a luxury. Her dad couldn't read. She's not embarrassed of her roots and she's stayed so, so connected to them. She just oozes gratitude. I think with that level of fame and adulation it's easy to feel entitled and live in a bubble of specialness. She's just so genuine. I really need to watch 9 to 5 again sometime soon. That was a great movie back in the day--I'd like to see how well it holds up to time. I watched 9 to 5 a few months ago. It's a funny film and I really enjoy it. The scenes of the three of them stealing the wrong dead body and then squabbling about it never fails to cheer me up. The way she asks the others to come look in the trunk is my favorite bit in the entire movie.

"We stole the wrong body. This is so disrespectful!"

We were an Imagination Library family! It is an awesome program, I wish it could go nationwide. The book choices were always wonderful too.

Speaking of favorite Dolly roles, am I the only one who loved her in Straight Talk? It is a badly reviewed box office flop from 1992 in which Dolly plays a down-on-her luck Arkansas woman who moves to Chicago to start a new life and, for reasons too complicated to explain here, gets mistaken for a radio talk show psychologist. The movie is absolutely delightful and it is pretty much a fairy tale romcom; the more I watch it, the more puzzled I am as to why it never took off with audiences or critics. But anyway, she was, as usual, a supernova of charm and likeability in the film.

It is not the holidays if I don't hear "A Christmas to Remember." I was on high alert for it over the loudspeakers when we were at Dollywood and didn't hear it until the very end of our trip. I love that song.
That being said, if you have the opportunity to go to Dollywood, go during the holidays. They have over 4 million lights up -- it is incredible.

But anyway, she was, as usual, a supernova of charm and likeability in the film. I saw that as a kid and I remember liking it. But now it is a bit tainted as her love interest is played by James Woods, who has proven himself to be pretty gross on social media (and there's the story Amber Tamblyn told where he tried to pick her up when she was 16 and continued to try even after she informed him how old she was). So I probably won't revisit that one, but I do remember Dolly being delightful (as always). ETA: PSA - "9 to 5" is currently on Hulu if anyone wants to relive the magic.

The way she asks the others to come look in the trunk is my favorite bit in the entire movie. This is mine: Violet: Oh, God. They know about the rat poison. I might as well just turn myself in. Doralee: Violet, it was an accident. Violet: I'm a murderer. Judy: No, you're not. Violet: I'm a murderess. I'm gonna go to the pen. My poor kids. I'm gonna lose my job.Judy: Violet, stop this. Violet: I'm no fool. I've killed the boss, you think they're not gonna fire me for a thing like that?

I LOVE the scene where Doralee confronts Dabney Coleman and she's says something like "I've got a gun out there in my purse, and I'll change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot!" I don't advocate violence, but the look on the boss's face is pure terror. The fantasy scene where their roles are flipped and she is sexually harassing him is hilarious too.

Oh my God...that "I am a murderess!" moment in 9 to 5 kills me every time. Everything about it is so hilariously perfect.

The line I remember best from 9 to 5 is after they realize they stole the wrong body and put it back in a wheelchair in the bathroom. One of the cleaners walks in and sees it and yells out to her coworker, "Another stiff in the john!"
I don't have cable or hulu, so I may have to break down and pay to watch it again.
