It just opened in theaters, so it probably won't be available to stream for a couple months. There’s another part of the movie that I worry will be rough to sit through. I know what you're talking about (I think so, at least) and yeah, that's way more problematic (but I think it's supposed to be?) than the relationship between Alana and Gary. I believe it's only two scenes, though.

The “it was acceptable back then!” feels like a justification for terrible human conditions to persist or a dismissal of history’s blind spots. I don’t think the central relationship in this movie is exploitative, but I can’t imagine everyone would be a-OK on their friendship/romance.

I mean, if the criteria to make a movie was for everyone to be on board I don't think any movies would get made. Also, I wonder if Bradley Cooper will get a BSA nomination for this. It's a super small role, but he's hilarious.

It's a super small role, but he's hilarious. Movies don’t need to necessarily reflect the best of humanity, I’m not trying to throw stones at what seems to be a well-made and intelligent movie. Hell, for me the movie that should’ve won the Best Picture Oscar in 1991 should’ve been Goodfellas over Dances with Wolves, but the latter film was seen as more “morally sound” than the former. However, I am a little bit hesitant in watching a movie that has an age gap relationship in it. There are far too many films that portray age gap relationships as acceptable and desirable. It should be apparent that they aren’t due to consent, power imbalances, and neurological maturity. Unfortunately, I am at a disadvantage that I will not be able to see the movie (I live too far away from a theater, still hesitant to go to a theater during COVID-19, lack of money, lack of car, etc.) for a while and I’m just reading reviews on the movie right now. I’m sure if I watch the movie I would have a completely different perception, but many of the reviewers have mentioned the issue with the central relationship in Licorice Pizza.

I'll admit that watching the movie, the first time she said she was 25 I thought she was lying. As the movie went on, I realized that wasn't the case, but still was never absolutely certain that she was 25. Their behavior - his seeming so much older than 15, her seeming younger than 25, made the relationship work for the purpose of a movie. For me, it was escapist fun, so I didn't spend a lot of time focused on the age issue.

I just watched this tonight and thought it was terrible. I like slice of life movies, but I feel at a minimum movies like that need characters that are charming and compelling to watch, which this movie did not have. Acting was fine, but it was unrealistic to say the least, and frankly disturbing. My teen watched it with me and she was disgusted.

Putting aside the disturbing age disparity of the leads, it was meandering, pointless, and just flat-out boring. *yawn*

So, looks like I’ll skip this for my Best Picture Oscar nominees watch (also skipping King Richard and Don’t Look Up).
I’ll save Dune until I can watch both parts next year in the theaters.
Already have The Power of the Dog and CODA down!

I quite liked Don’t Look Up. Bruce Willis/Armageddon for the 2020s. After all the earth in peril movies I’ve seen, this was very different.

I’m not a huge fan of Armageddon and just don’t have enough energy to watch its “funny” equivalent. OT: I’ll try with Licorice Pizza, Bradley Cooper is supposed to be really good in it.
