I imagine all of the remaining royal families are up against the dueling expectations of 1) Be glamorous, wear tiaras and jewels, be noble, be examples for the masses and 2) Be humble, be civil servants, be "just like the people". Part 2 doesn't jive with some of the older crowd. Most of the younger ones married commoners who have varying degrees of success as "married-into" royalty. I'm very happy to see Felipe and Letizia take over as they seem very hard-working, in the context of other royals, and their daughters are ridiculously adorable. Probably the cutest princesses in Europe.

The abdication has passed the lower house of Parliment. Now it goes to the Senate to be voted on June 17th. And the Daily Mail goes from strength to strength. I think she looked just fine before she married Felipe- she looked like a newsreader who wants to be taken seriously. It's called dressing for the job, and expensive bandage dresses aren't going to happen when you're broadcasting live from Ground Zero in New York.

What are Juan Carlos and Sophia's titles now? Or do they no longer have any?

What are Juan Carlos and Sophia's titles now? Or do they no longer have any? HM King Juan Carlos and HM Queen Sofia. In contrast, Felipe is HM The King and Letizia is HM The Queen.

I really want to see a coronation with ermine capes, bejeweled scepters, oversized crowns and peasants weeping and lying prostrate before their God-like leader. None of this "wear a business suit and take a photo" shit. No wonder monarchy isn't popular anymore.

If they want to fork out their own money for that, sure, they can make it as elaborate as they want. As a taxpayer however, oh hell no. More or less the gist of it.

Also, the Spanish monarchy has been mired in scandals in the last few years. JC's elephant hunting, Felipe's sister and brother in law embezzling money from charities. Add to that the bad economic situation in the country. Going for pomp and circumstance would have been met with fury, and rightly so.
I thought the proclamation struck the right tone. They presented themselves as modern working monarchs. In that context it also made sense that Felipe basically gave a political speech. He outlined what role the monarchy has played in the Spanish democratic project and what role he wants it to play in the future. His manner is so reserved and low-key so it flies a bit under the radar, but I actually think that he has been looking very determined and acting that way and like he knows exactly what he wants to accomplish.

I know the royals are all in a tough spot having to prove they are useful and not just a drain on public resources, but I just think the whole deal is pointless without grand royal weddings and coronations.
