I was just reading this morning on Celebitchy about how Letizia fled Mallorca to Zurich and how she and Felipe are on the verge of divorce. The article did not mention why they are on the rocks. Somebody threw out the idea that he probably inherited his father's propensity for being a big fat cheater, but I haven't seen any evidence of that.
That family is a mess.

I read the same article. I know Spain is in a world of hurt, and I've heard rumors that the de Bourbon's are wearing out their welcome. But to me, Felipe and Letizia always seem like they get along so well. I'm kind of shocked by the news.
I will say that she's always looked on the anorexic side to me, but I've never seen her as cold or aloof; Just someone who takes her job seriously.
And I agree Ginger, the family seems like a tiny step up from the Grimaldi's of Monaco (ouch!)

Infanta Cristina now officially a suspect in the tax fraud/money laundering scandal.
Will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Apparently the prosecutor objected to the court issung the summons. If I were an advisor to Juan Carlos, I would be telling him to very seriously consider abdicating in favor of Felipe.

I wonder if HRH Princess Goop is dreaming of what could have been.

It makes me rub my hands with delight at the thought that the Spanish grandees who hate Letizia are fanning themselves and planning to flee to Monaco. I hope Felipe kicks JC out of the palace so Mama Sofia can live in peace without being continuously humiliated by the old goat.

I thought she was generally well-respected, but there are some bitter Spanish folks out there about the controversial (because she's a divorcee?) Letizia. I'm happy for them and Spain.

Now that I think about it, Felipe was another who pulled a George Clooney...dated a series of "unacceptable" women and then out of nowhere got engaged to more professional career woman. (Even with her divorce.)
The Spanish royals have really dropped in my esteem in the past few years with all the scandals and such. They seem to be a few steps above eurotrash. Of course, according to this legend to do with the tombs where the Spanish kings are buried, when they run out, there will be no more spanish monarchy. Felipe is the last one there's room for. They could have added more in the 15 years since I've been to Spain. Or, you know, it could be a legend with no real power over reality. Either way.

This is the third abdication in a year- I guess many of the senior monarchs are hitting the wall?

I suspect many of them are suffering from what exactly is your purpose syndrome so bringing in younger fresher blood will stave off their subjects from kicking them out especially in countries where the economy is circling the drain and/or they are more traditional figureheads than anything.
