As someone who was a huge fan of both, I have to say, I don't think their music was all that similar. I believe Eric Erlandson had a bigger part in Hole's songwriting than Kurt did. Courtney's treatment of Eric over the years has been really appalling (not as much as the way she treats her daughter, but I'm just saying). I don't think he's ever said a bad word about her and Lord knows, he could write a book if he wanted to.

Interestingly, Eric did write a book, Letter's to Kurt, here, which seems to be way for him to grieve a friend and former competitor/mentor. Man, it's hard to watch/listen to the Kurt songs (although weirdly, I've been listening to In Utero and Celebrity Skin the last few days). LTT was one of my favorite albums of all time and I still think it's great. I do think C & K influenced each other's writing. To me, LTT reflects the more obtuse lyrics that Kurt used about bodies and physicality, although I think it's definitely tempered by Courtney's themes and ideas. Anyway, I'll always have some goodwill to Love for her Hole years, but man, I wish she'd get a sane, organizing force in her life and have a better relationship with her daughter.

It's a miracle of epic proportions that Frances is still sane. I'm sure Courtney is going to go on a massive twitter rant over the biological rant but I really can't Frances for working that little dig in. Kurt's sister has probably been more of a mother to Frances than Courtney has.
Man, it's just amazing how far downhill Courtney has fallen. Yet, I have a feeling she's going to be like the Keith Richards of her generation. No matter how much drugs she takes it won't kill her. So, who knows how much further she's going to fall.

Other than the lyrics and tempo, it's the exact same song.
I doubt Courtney took entire songs like that too often, but she did it at least once and took credit for it. I have never thought Kurt wrote *all* of Live Through This, but I think she at least got riffs from him here and there.

Well, yes. Hole re-worked it - and quite well, I think. FWIW, Kurt really liked Hole's version of Old Age. I remember him playing the CD for a reporter who was interviewing him (for Spin maybe?) and talking about CL's talent for poetry. I had no idea Eric had written a book. I'll have to read that. Isn't Keith Richards claiming to be off drugs, though? I read Courtney's recent interview with Vanity Fair and it sounds like she's taking massive amounts of pills, along with who knows what else. You can only do that for so long. ETA: This thread has sent me into a youtube spiral looking for live Hole clips now. This page has lots of videos and here's a festival show from 1993. I haven't listened to most of these songs in years. They're actually still really good.

I guess I did remember it all wrong! Can you imagine anyone saying what DG said back then about Courtney now? It seems like Courtney was crazy in that 'funky wacky character' kind of way at one time, but whatever mental illnesses she has (there are probably more than a few) progressed over the years to the point where she became 100% batshit and disturbing with no way back to even a semblence of sanity. And Frances Bean was witness to the deterioration. Thank God there were sane people around to take care of her. When you have a mentally unstable parent, having a sane caretaker to offset that can make all the difference.

I'm sure Courtney is going to go on a massive twitter rant over the biological rant but I really can't Frances for working that little dig in. Kurt's sister has probably been more of a mother to Frances than Courtney has. A lot of relatives have stepped up to raise Frances: Kurt's mom and sister; Courtney's sister and stepfather. I believe Courtney's mother is also close to Frances. And, of course, there were nannies as well. I think Frances' situation is different from Bobbi Kristina Brown's in that, unlike Whitney's family, Courtney's and Kurt's folks don't rely on Courtney for their livelihoods and don't seem to be enablers. (Of course, I could be wrong.) I have never heard anything bad about Kurt's sister, and I know Kurt's mother was close to him and Courtney.

It's hard to gauge their relationship because all of the information comes from Courtney, and sometimes she's on good terms with them, sometimes she's not, and sometimes she just makes up stuff about them to suit her agenda. In this endless river of Bullshit she's spewing here she claims she gives Nirvana money to Kim and Wendy Cobain due to "tax laws" (wtf?) but 30 seconds later says they are so destitute Wendy has no front door and Kim lives under the bridge Kurt used to live under. When Frances permanently separated herself from Courtney and went to live with her grandmother, I believe Courtney implied Wendy was trying to con Frances into buying her a house. So who knows exactly. Wendy and Kim Cobain aren't rich and I think they do rely on Courtney/Frances for money, but I don't think they are in the same league as Whitney's horrible entourage.

Kurt didn't live under any bridge. Krist debunked that story. Try again, Courtney.

There you go. Add to that the fact that her brain probably resembles swiss cheese from all the drugs, and I would doubt Courtney's ability to be informed of anything resembling reality even if she said "The sky is blue."
