That doesn't excuse all the crap she's pulled since. She's a grown-up now.

No, it doesn't excuse her actions. I agree that she is an adult now and needs to take responsibility for herself (and her daughter, and any pets!). That was not the point of my post, though. My comments were in response to some previous posts I had read where people claimed she must have been really unbearable to be around (as a CHILD) that her parents had no choice but to abandon her, and that her father claimed she was unlovable almost as soon as she emerged from the womb. That, combined with the fact that her father gave her acid at age 4, tells me that her parents majorly screwed up in raising her. There were also some comparisons to Nancy Spungen and her tragic personality disorder - I was responding that (based on the acid and naked body painting allegations) I don't believe that Courtney was one of those children who are born that way. I think its a case of nature vs. nurture, and she wasn't nurtured properly by the people who were responsible to see that she became a normal, functioning adult. I suppose its possible that Courtney was born with a personality disorder, b/c she is definetly waaay out there, but I just can't make that judgment when I hear that she was fed drugs as a pre-schooler.

ETA: This does NOT mean that I excuse her actions as an adult in any way. She is a terrible mother and my sympathy is with her poor daughter.

Yeah, I don't think you can really know the impact that unprescribed narcotics to a 4 year old can have. It's got to be major. And I doubt there have been controlled studies to assess that! But I do think she was "born wack" as well. I mean, her father obviously had his issues, and her mother is in psychology - always a haven for the crazy*. Nature AND Nurture conspired against her.

*Slightly tongue in cheek, but psychology/psychiatry do attract those with their own mental issues of varying degrees.

Seriously, Courtney's mother sounds like she's kind of flaky, but I have never heard anything about her being abusive and neglectful. Hank Harrison, on the other hand, is a nasty piece of work.

Well, I picked a copy of Linda Carroll's book in a local used bookstore. Actually, I found the bound galleys for sale, and I read the book. I won't reveal all the details, but I will say it is NOT an expose on Courtney--it's a memoir of Linda's own sort of topsy-turvy life. And no, she does not offer any sleazy details about her daughter, though she does talk about Courtney in her book.

Damn, she has lost a lot of weight. I hope it was by healthy eating and exercise but, given Courtney's past, my fear (and my first reaction upon seeing the pics) is that she is back on drugs. Please tell me I am wrong.
