That's not really what they said. They said they "have decided to separate, but they are hopeful they’ll be able to get through this tough time". I didn't take that to mean they are hoping to reconcile, although it could be read that way.
Anyway, I still think it's dumb to announce a split unless it's truly over. It's not like anybody knew or cared what their situation was prior to the announcement, and now the whole world will forever know they've got serious marital problems.

I actually gained mounds of respect for HS last night. Unlike plenty of celebs in the past (or the present), she allowed all of the interviewers to ask about her situation, answered them honestly (I thought she was choking up a few times), and just dealt with the questions and then moved on. She's still wearing her wedding ring and told Billy Bush that they're trying to work it out.
I was sure that she'd avoid the press entirely so that she didn't have to answer questions, and I give her serious points for enduring.

Anyone have a pic of the back of her dress last night?
I'm with Freeelancergirl, I thought she was a class act last night during a difficult time.

I also thought she came across really well at the Globes.
I loved the gown - simple, sexy, and elegant. It looked like vintage Halston. But she could have done something more dressy with her hair - it was very blah and flat.
Did anyone else notice her say "reverend" when she should have said "reverent"?

Still don't like her, but I saw a pic of the back of her dress on Getty Images, and it's really cool. I take back my earlier crack about her dress choice.

Back of her gownCount me in on the Hilary fanbase. I think she's really classy and much sexier than some people give her credit for. Her body is awesome and I love her hair and pout.

Count me with those who thought Hilary was classy last night.
As for the announcement, I can't call on it unless I know the reason behind it. Perhaps she and Chad just wanted to get it out there on their own terms so they wouldn't have to deal with the rumors - beating people to the punch, if you will. Maybe her publicist got a question about it and decided to just release a blanket statement. Hilary and Chad have never done anything in the past just to attract attention, but you never know.
But for now, I'm putting my money on "wanted to beat the gossip mill to the punch" on the announcement. That seems to fit with how Hilary handled the questions last night - she answered them without a publicist hovering around to give reporters the stink eye for daring to ask Hilary such a question and she didn't get pissy when people asked the questions. She just answered them and didn't seem to be looking for sympathy. A lot of celebs in the middle of personal problems won't agree to interviews and will just walk straight down the red carpet or will sneak in the back. Hilary just seems to want to be as straightforward as possible to shoot down rumors and then just get on with her life.

But when have Chad and Hillary ever been the subject of the gossip mill? I really don't think anybody would know for a long time if they discreetly decided to separate. I wonder whether Chad unilaterally made the decision to end things and made the announcement (a la Tom Cruise) and Hillary was not into it.

It is true that she doesn't exactly get the tongues wagging with her personal situation, but perhaps she did want to beat the press to the punch because it is awards season and Chad has ALWAYS been there with her (often sobbing!) so people were probably going to ask about him and they might have wanted to avoid some awkwardness.

She certainly showed more class than Isaac Mizrahi did last night.
