Yeah, I agree. Acknowledging that you benefited from something isn't the same as excusing it and I think it's especially good that she did since (if I remember correctly), she was once on a roundtable with Sally Field and when Field made a comment about ageism, Hathaway immediately said that it was getting better. I don't know if she had her own past comments in mind but given that they're eternally on the internet I think it's wise for her to leave that room for herself.

Is the 24 year old Anne is losing parts to Jennifer Lawrence? The mention of "24 year olds" really stuck out to me because that was so specific and Jennifer's age (24 up until two weeks ago) is always being discussed. Everybody's losing parts to Lawrence just because she's the #1 actress. She's getting parts she's way too young for, and the Sony hack revealed she was being pursued for parts she is too young for and absolutely wrong for as well (Cleopatra).
And part of Anne Hathaway losing parts to other actresses, younger or not, might be the Hath-a-hate phenomenon. Even though she won an Oscar, Hathaway is not really known for being an actress that everyone respects for her skills. She's pretty good, but it's not like top-tier directors are pursuing her for her unique talents. And when you combine that with her not being popular (and in many quarters being actively disliked) this might be more about a general Hathaway decline. We kind of have to take her word for it that age is the reason she's not getting the parts she wants.

Yeah, I think there are other reasons for her losing roles. At the same time, if age weren't a factor, she'd be losing roles to other actresses in their 30s.

I do wonder if some of the issue isn't more about how insufferable she got during her Oscar campaign a year or so back. Everyone got a bit of Anne overload and that probably didn't go unnoticed by the industry. That said, there are plenty of male actors of all ages who are HUGELY insufferable and can't stop getting hired no matter how awful they continue to be. Hired and paid a ton more than even the young darlings like Jennifer Lawrence at that. So maybe Anne's real dilemma isn't ageism, but sexism. Rant away, Anne, rant away!!

She won an Oscar two years ago. During her awards campaign that year and the one for Rachel Getting Married she went on and on about how awesome her career was and mentioned how versatile she was, going from Disney princess to Fantine. Within two years her career went downhill? I don't know, AnnE. Sexism is definitely a problem, in Hollywood and everywhere else. And I'm sure she's received her fair share of sexist comments from producers. But I think her bad luck was winning the same year as JLaw who then went on to be offered every part ever. How the heck did 37 year old Jessica Chastain benefit from Oscar noms, not wins, the way she did?

Anne has that same thing that HRH has. All the jokes about her insufferable persona seem to have stuck. That throwaway line in Trainwreck got big laughs from the audience with whom I saw it. AH could be a perfectly lovely person, but the perception is that she sucks. I remember an article from a couple of years ago where she whined that she's uncool and no one thinks she's sexy. Yikes. Save that for your therapist. If I'm a casting director or producer, I would probably think twice about hiring her.

I always felt like the Hatha-hate was way overblown and it seems like she worked over-time trying to reverse the damage. She went away for a decent amount of time and she came back trying to show some self-awareness and humility. I guess I'm easy cuz I'm all like "Ann(E!), you're forgiven." But I guess most of the general public does see her as having some baggage. I find myself rooting for her because of the way James Franco threw her under the bus.

I love Anne Hathaway. I appreciate her lack of irony and her earnestness. That can make some people itchy. People don't trust it. That's why so many assholes are defended--at least they're being honest, blah, blah. As if being nice is always you being fake.
As for Jessica Chastain, hasn't she herself expressed frustration with ageism?

Hollywood is a cruel cruel place and everyone, even Jennifer Lawrence ages out eventually.

I actually love Anne! I think her career is trajectory is pretty interesting, too. I didn't see her Oscar performance but have always enjoyed her in her roles. I can see the HRH comparisons, but I don't think she is quite there yet, for me. I hope she does some interesting stuff in the future. To me, she's pretty likable. That is always subject to change if she yammers on about 25k a year.
I loved her in Rachel. I can see how she might bug, though.
