People keep talking about Eddie Redmayne's Oscar campaign as if the world was carpet-bombed with Redmayne and I didn't find that to be the case at all. Maybe I was oblivious to all the publicity he did because all I remember is being aware that the movie and his performance were both thought to be deserving Oscar contenders and watching him give a few acceptance speeches. I did not leave Oscar season knowing a whole lot about him or being sick of him personally. I suppose all of that means it was a really smart and effective campaign - if so, people should be emulating that.
As for Anne, she came off as *very* phony in a lot of speeches and interviews. I remember her attempting to summon fake tears during an interview while discussing her own momentous performance in Les Mis. It's hard to like a phony, and her acting is mediocre so it's not like she makes up for it with her work. Hate may be a strong word, but if it continues to keep her out of the top tier of young actresses and keeps her from being nominated for undeserved Oscars every year, I'm all for the Hath-a-hate. If she wants to go back to making dumb romantic comedies with Kate Hudson, I'm fine with that.

I'm bitter because I think Eddie Redmayne is holding Michael Keaton's Oscar. And because he's got more Oscar bait for next year (The Danish Girl).
Topic? I liked Anne's lip sync battle with Emily Blunt. And Baby Wol and I watch Princess Diaries and she really was charming back then. Whatever "star quality" is she really had it.

I'm with Ginger on Eddie's campaign. I was far less aware of his than Benedict's-- and I thought he deserved his Oscar (but different strokes..... and that's the problem w/ Oscars. It comes down to preference, and who likes who more. There will always be bitterness involved).
I'm glad that Anne went away and lived her life; spent time with her husband and gave me a palate cleanse. I'm fine with her now. As for the Lea Michele comparison, I haven't met very many theater kids, so I can't really make a judgment there, but I've met Lea Michele twice, and she's a first class snotty b*tch. I've heard nothing but good things from industry insiders about Anne.

At least Eddie made an effort to look nice. A lot of men on the red carpet look like they're attending a football game- as the mascot.

I actually didn't notice Eddie Redmayne campaigning last year because I think Benedict was standing in front of him at every turn. Also, I'm glad Michael Keaton didn't win because I HAAAAATED Birdman - with every fiber of my being. I like Michael Keaton, don't get me wrong (not the Batman shit, Mr. Mom! Beetlejuice! Pacific Heights stalker guy!) I agree with all of what Prisma said about Anne. She's so mediocre I don't think she could do an imitation of Lea Michele imitating Lady Gaga imitating Streisand in a karaoke bar that was full of drunk businessmen and impress them much. I actually think Amy Adams could pull that off, though. Rachel Getting Married was like a small town in Idaho deciding to let go of their white supremacist past and become the next Portland, OR. We're so ethnic and edgy! Sorry Jonathan Demme. You should know better.

Maybe I'm one of the few card-carrying Hathahaters left standing? I'll take one for the minority then. I can't stand her. Worse than Gwyneth for me. I didn't like her before the Oscar campaign and that nonsense pushed me over the edge. I still don't like her; something about her just irrationally grates on me. I find her to be so EXTRA all the time - so over the top, so earnest, so over-acting and demanding your attention and praise at all times. The Lea Michele comparison is a good one.
I was never a fan of her acting but I haven't seen many of her movies so pre-Oscar campaign I could exist in my little bubble and avoid her. (Sidenote: I ran into her on the sidewalk in Boston while she was filming "Bride Wars"...she was with her con-man boyfriend - she was kind of rude and I was not impressed.) Then she was predictably over the top and mugging like crazy in the James Franco Oscar co-host debacle; they both were annoying in their own ways there.
She was seemingly everywhere with Les Miserables. I thought her Oscar campaign was bigger than most others I can remember (Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, even Melissa Leo and her stupid ads), with the interviews on her rigid diet, her haircut, the singing and how she could have done it EVEN BETTER but oh hee hee the director liked her first take because she's just so talented and ENOUGH ALREADY and the underwear-flashing car ride and the Golden Globes speech and the Amanda Seyfried dress issue and the "it came true" twee whisper and the crocodile tears afterward and...
Deep breath. I'm kidding but really.
And here we are, years later and she keeps bringing it up. Or, at least, she's responding to interviewer questions in a way to illicit sympathy. Anne, you're a big girl. You won the Oscar, you got what you wanted! It's Hollywood. Not everyone will like you and that's ok. Just move on.

Maybe I'm visiting the wrong sites because I'm not seeing "hate" so much as "oh brother, her again." Hathaway seems mostly harmless, she just...takes some getting used to. Like a new puppy, adorable but exhausting. At first it's all like this, then a few years later, finally you get this.

I like her in her films. Overall I think she's a talented and hardworking woman who is proud of her achievements and body of work. There is nothing wrong with that.
But .... She's grating. She always seems "on" and that's why she comes across as phony. And super self-involved. I know all of these celebrities are, but with her I can't imagine her spending more than 30 seconds thinking of someone other than herself. She's caught up with her world, her gift, the burden of being Anne with an "e."
