His family seems like such a mess.

Bob Marley, poet and a prophet! I've always loved his music, ever since I was a little kid. But learning later in life how much he cheated on Rita was kinda disappointing.

Yeah, I know. I guess in my youth and naivety I had built him up in my mind to an almost mystical, demigod status and just assumed he would have more class and taste (Anna Wintour?!?!) than the average musician. But he was human, and a big ol' dread-locked horn dog- just like most guys who get a little power and status under their belts.
One thing I love most about the guy though- Almost every CD, tape, or vinyl (yes vinyl!) I've ever gotten of his almost always will have different versions of different songs. Like, he must have just been such a recording fool in his 36 years on this planet, revising and tweaking his best works. It's always kept everything interesting to try and come across yet another version of Lively up Yourself or Get Up, Stand Up or whatever.

Get out!
When Mr. Bearie and I went to Jamaica last year the tour bus for our day trip showed a Marley documentary. He is deinfitnely still one of the island's biggest exports.
I recall once seeing a show on urban legends in which a doctor addressed the rumor that Bob was injected with cancer by the FBI (or was it the CIA?). He said that's just not how cancer works (he went into a lot more detail). But apparently a lot of people still believe it.

Bob Marley, poet and a prophet! I've always loved his music, ever since I was a little kid. But learning later in life how much he cheated on Rita was kinda disappointing. I think it was more complicated than that. I think it had something to do with his belief systems as he got older. I don't think he and Rita were strictly together in that sense except legally still being married. He had had several romances and his main romantic partner at the time seemed to be Cindy Brakespeare. I think she had had his baby and unlike the others he was going to live with he more or less as his wife. Rita and Cindy in particular did not get on because of that - the relationship with Cindy was really serious and he was in effect finally going to leave what was left of the marriage with Rita to be with Cindy fulltime. I think Rita thought in no time he would make it official and divorce her. I read a book written by Rita and she describes it from her side. SShe emphasizes of course that though he was with Cindy she felt she still had a bond with him he didn't have with anyone else. Seemed he was going back and forth on the leaving her thing so she believes he was not serious about leaving. Cindy from her side has done interview saying Rita was just making it difficult but Bob was serious about living with her permanently and he didn't want to go back to Rita. He said, she said and then she said in short. But I think he had fallen in love with Cindy for real. Noone knows what he was going to do about it because then he got ill and died. Cindy says he wrote "Turn Your Lights Down Low" for her. And I like that song. And I hope she and Rita get along better for Bob's children's sakes. In the interview I saw of Cindy speaking she says all the mothers try to get along as they know it was Bob Marley's wish that all his children from all of them should know each other and get along. Hope it's true - but they seem to have done enough wrangling over his estate for o many years to make it seem like there is trouble putting all that intention into practice. ETA: All I said could be wrong. I'm basing it all on Rita book which I read last Christmas and fleeting memories of Cindy speaking on camera in an interview for years ago...and my own speculation based on what I can remember from both accounts.

Really? That's crazy! I like him, but the burnout teens who only think he's cool because he did pot and know nothing about his politics annoy me.
