Hey, that means she was almost Doris Day's daughter-in-law. How cool is that? She and Terry Melcher leased their house to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. I suppose that means she was also almost killed by the Manson Family, which is also sort of cool.

Candice wrote one of the best Hollywood memoirs ever (IMO) about twenty years ago--it's called "Knock Wood" and it's full of stories about playing dress-up with Liza Minnelli when they were kids, and riding Uncle Walt Disney's miniature train around his estate. There's a particularly hilarious story about explaining to the young men she met while at boarding school in Switzerland that her father was a ventriloquist on the radio and watching their eyes glaze over with confusion and alarm.
She talks about her relationship with her father and her difficulties connecting with him, but at no time does she ever whine, complain, or blame him for being distant. And you come away with a lot of respect for both of them.
That's what I've always loved about Candice Bergen--she's no whiner. I still want to look like her when I grow up.

<Moan> Nooooooooooo, don't tell me she's a Nicole Kidman type. Ack. Everything that I've heard about their relationship indicated that it was the real deal. So, I really want to believe that there was nothing fishy about how they got together or about their marriage. I know I'm biased but I just don't get the impression that she would have stood by if it was a fake Hollywood deal, replete with mistresses and covered up scandal. Louis Malle was considered one of the greats. But he wasn't exactly well known nor bankable in the States (let's just say that he's more of a Criterion Collection staple ). I don't think marrying him leveraged Candice any power in Hollywood (cuz the man himself didn't have much, if any at all).

Oooh, I just discovered this thread! I´m a huge Candice fan, too, and I have to agree on everything that was said so far. She really seems to be an intelligent, decent, down-to-earth person with a straight set of values. I give her props for that. She could have easily gone down another road considering her background.
A couple of days ago I heard some rumors that Candice has suffered a stroke just a few days before her mother died. Does anybody know anything about this? Any thoughts?

Color me surprised when I turned to the back of the November issue of Bon Appetit and on the celebrity question page, there she was! I thought she looked really good but perhaps it's just airbrushing? She seemed to look a little wrinklier during the 2 minutes of Boston Legal that I saw. (at least I think that's the show...)

I loved what Louis Malle said about Murphy Brown: "I pity the poor man who has to live with her." ;D

Candace is my age and I've admired her throughout the years, including all the bad reviews. While everyone praised Ann Margret for "Carnal Knowledge," Candace was equally terrific. Plus, she is a gifted photographer and story-teller. "Knock on Wood," was a great read, including stories about her love life when we were all hippies. She has a great sense of humor; I always thought that Murphy Brown was so unlike her real personality.

She was one of the few brilliant characters in "Miss Congeniality." I mean, so was William Shatner, but really, I felt she would be able to strangle someone just by giving them a look. Pure steel.

I know this is several months back, but I'm sorry--that just rubs me in a very wrong way. I wouldn't call being disembowled, having your unborn baby torn out and have your blood smeared all over the house as "sort of cool."
