Personally, I've always believed the reason he never made it in the US is because he's too camp. It's like he's doing a gimmick or a parody and not a real performance and maybe that's why a lot of people don't see the point in wasting time listening to him. I agree. I don't think it's that Americans aren't smart enough to understand the satire/sarcasm or humor of his work. And I also agree that he has never really been promoted over here like other British artists have been. Hell, even BBMak had a big push here. Of course, I lurve him so I don't consider him a waste of time! And my father actually loves "Rock D.J."--song and video!

Well I'm not English or American but I've spent a lot of time in those countries (like several year respectively) and I have to strongly disagree. If anything the UK likes their entertainment more "lite" than the US. Big Brother anyone? Americans simply aren't into pop for adults. Period. Like most English people aren't into Kenny Chesney. There are equally "good" artists in each category but they don't crossover.

I hate the notion that we are all idiots for not like Robbie Williams. I adore 'Angels', but his other stuff? Not for me at all. That's what it comes down to. Not that Americans are too stupid to get this wonderfully intelligent person (although there are some) but just the fact that his music is just not our cup of tea. With the 'Rock DJ' vid contraversy, that really was all the publicity he should have needed to get our interest but his songs...we didn't like. I hate the arrogance of some Robbie fans.
And while I'm at it, please take James Blunt back. Please.

Forget it. You still owe us for the Madonna/Fishstick double whammy. Yeah, there's no way we're making up for that any time soon.

Yeah, hi! I'm not saying that RW is everybody's thing, nor that he has to be or should be. I was just generalizing about the American entertainment market. I don't think that anybody on here could claim with a straight face that intelligence is the key to success in the U.S., and Robbie's brand of self-loathing and cleverness seems a prime example of intelligent pop.
I think there's a whole lot to the camp thing, though. RW and The Darkness are both high camp (and quite smart, if you ask me), and the U.S. has no idea what to do with them.
I'm an American, by the way. I just think the public is always pretty stupid, and the American public has its own idiosyncracies of stupidity.

YAY! I hunted for this thread, but when I do searches I never find anything.
So, I've decided to fixate on Robbie for a while as his new song is infinitely more interesting than Justin's and I am a pop music junkie. Must read back a few pages in the thread now....
ETA: Okay, so I'm American. What is it with British press hating the new song Rudebox? That's insane.
I would have that arrogant goofball's babies without a second thought. I lurve lurve lurve him.

We can go on all day on the reasons why he isn't a star in this country but that's tedious.
He has his fans in this country so that should be it.
Perhaps Simon Cowell should create a reality series starring him. It's probably the only way he'll get any attention in this country.

I'm not exactly his biggest fan and haven't really followed his career that diligently, but the atrocity of Jessia Simpson's cover of his Angels? Ack! Not to mention he really likes to take the piss out of himself. A lot. Even if his music doesn't always appeal to me, his interviews are fun.
