She's pretty open in her book about her bulimia, bad choices of men and what she did and didn't do to keep her men happy. I had no idea that Henry was so... strange. I guess in those days people had to get married and have children whether they wanted to or not.

She's very proud of that book and didn't use a ghost writer.

I think she's that perpetual frosh girl that everyone meets in university who is SO AMAZED that there are viewpoints that aren't shared by her parents and, like, OMG Che Guevera was hot!
Basically: dumb as a post and with a personality that would peel the paint off said post. And I wasn't even alive during the Vietnam War.

Coming Home is one of my all time favorite movies. She and Jon Voight are so amazing and beautiful. Oh man, I turn into some sort of new age wannabe whenever I talk about that movie. Everything is "beautiful" and "meaningful" - but it is! I always saw that film as her unspoken apology to the POWs and veterans that she hurt with her anti-war campaigning and the infamous photograph on the anti-aircraft gun (not to mention when she called the POWs who said they were tortured liars - yikes!). I haven't read her autobiography and have no idea if she thinks of the film in that way (in my understanding, she regrets the photo and not much else about her Vietnam protesting days) but it is such a sensitive film where Vietnam is concerned, looking at the issue from many different angles and all of them (for the most part) so thoughtful. It is possible that her participation was, in part, an effort to make amends.
I honestly don't know that much about her personal life, but I usually enjoy the hell out of her films. I have to remember to check out her autibiography because she really has had an interesting and multi-faceted life. I only wish she hadn't "retired" from acting. I do hope Monster-in-Law isn't a one-off and she decides to get back in the ring and act again. It is a different world out there for actresses of "a certain age" so she might not get the quality roles she once did and I can see that keeping her from acting in many films. Good parts for older women are hard to come by these days.

I saw her on Charlie Rose a couple of weeks ago and she said that she'll be acting again and has a couple of projects lined up. She said the reason she did Monster-in-Law was for the money, half of which she uses for her charities in Eastern Europe. When she was promoting the film she said that she would definetely consider acting again, because she enjoys it and it allows her to do her other work.

She absorbs and reflects the opinions and attitudes of whatever man she is associated with at the time. Sexpot with Roger Vadim, Anti-war activist with Donald Sutherland, Corporate wife with Ted Turner. I remember seeing her on TV at one of the Braves games with Turner and they were both doing the "Tomahawk Chop" gesture - this at a time when Native Americans were protesting the use of such Native American symbols during sporting events. But by then she had morphed from the activist to the corporate wife.
I don't think she's very bright in fact. Rather silly. And appears even more so when she talks about things like she was the first to discover them. Her most recent comments about the Hanoi visit blames the bad publicity on...Richard Nixon. She claims that the photos didn't surface for several weeks after her visit and it was all Nixon's fault. Also claims that she did not notice the huge group of photogs when she sat on that tank cause she was so tired. Puhlease! She was a professsional actress, well used to having her picture taken and aware of how photographs present people. She's full of baloney.
I saw her some time back on CSpan when she spoke at the National Press Club. The overall impression I got was that she was very needy. She began her talk by thanking some people for coming to hear her talk, but her thanks were very cloying and went way beyond the simple - Thank you for coming, etc. She just came across as very needy of their approval.
Rather like Streisand who keeps making those movies where people assure her that she's really pretty.
Also she sold people a bill of goods when she was doing her exercise tapes with her "No pain, no gain" mantra when in fact she was bulimic. She didn't get her body by healthy exercise at all.

She is actually very bright, but I can see your points. She is very, very needy and leans a GREAT deal on her children. If you notice, she does not attend major media events-like picking up awards or premieres w/out one of them being with her. If they can't come, she takes her dog. All that leaning on her kids has kind of had a very bad affect on their personal lives.

Her son is pretty good-looking. Talks like he has a mouth of marbles, though.
