I am amazed that the comment she made is even still relevant or that it caused such a big brouhaha. She has a right to say whatever she wants and the American people by the same token have a right to say whatever they want (and express it by buying or not buying their albums- I don't remember the Bush administration issuing an official or unofficial public ban on the DC's or recall the albums or give summonses or prison sentences to DC supporters). Whatever. The DC's are not the first people to get death threats. Of course it is wrong and scary, but when you are famous you expose yourself to that element moreso than the average Joe and when you say something that may piss off the odd person, you become a greater target. Celebrities have bodyguards and live in gated communities for a reason and they also limit their exposure if they are smart for such reasons. I just think she is an idiot to do it and complain about the reprocussions. She is an adult with an IQ over 70 right?

The politics thread went bye-bye so let's not replace it with this one, OK? It's fine to talk about the controversy as it relates to the band but let's not debate the state of free speech on or off American soil.
That being said, I never was a fan of their music. I don't like country in any form.

I was surprised to find out that Natalie was married to Adrian Pasdar. I've always had a small crush on him.

Dang, I had this great post prepared, but reading Oxynia's comment above, I'm just going to say I really like the song. I also think that casting themselves in "The Crucible" was a stroke of brilliance. I also like that the end scenes were x-rays of spines. Because they have one.
I only listened to the one song, but if the rest of the album steers less country and more "mainstream" I may have to give it a listen. [smallvoice]I'm a lemming.[/sv]

I am amazed that the comment she made is even still relevant or that it caused such a big brouhaha. It shouldn't have been such a big deal and it should have blown over by now. There are lots of celebs that have said much worse and haven't paid nearly the price. IMO what makes this case different is the behavior of Clear Channel and the Nashville music Industry. In the normal course of things this would have been forgotten by now (except for that tenacious 37%) But Clear Channel jumped into this fray and really fanned the flames. They sponsered anti-Chicks rallies and Cd burnings and they banned the Dixie Chicks from their stations (and still do in some cases). Since C.C. practically has a monopoly in this country and because other artists were afraid of being banned they kept silent. Add to that the Nashville Music scene really turned against them. It might not have been government sanctioned censorship but it was dirty regardless. It's not unlike the Tom Cruise/South Park fiasco which outraged so many people. That's why it's still such an issue to the DC's and to people like me, who thought what happened was completely despicable. If those rallies had been started and sponsered by average people it would have been one thing but the fact is that most of them were sponsered by a very powerful conservative corporation who had the means to destroy their career. If CNN had sponsered Anti-Bush rallies and refused to air anything Bush said it would have been seen as abuse of power. And that's basically what CC did. And that wasn't the only issue of censorship with CC at that time. They distributed a list of songs that the station managers were supposed to remove from their playlist. It basically included any anti-war song released in the last 40 years.

As a huge fan of country music, I can safely say that Nashville and country music out of Nashville sucks in general. Give me anyone from Texas any day of the week.

Wow, good for her. I always felt a little sorry for Natalie-- she's a cutie in her own right, but as the least twiggy member of the group, she always got stuck with the weird hairstyles and ill-fitting "accent" outfits in their videos and stage appearances. That red handkerchief top she wore in the "Goodbye, Earl" video was an abomination.

But yeah, the red top was not flattering. The video was excellent though.

I like that all seven of their combined kids have normal names. Not an Apple or a Moxie Crimefighter in the bunch.
As for people being mad at what they said, I don't care if someone wants to say, "Natalie Maines pissed me off and I won't buy any more Dixie Chicks CDs." What gets me is when those people run around with protest signs or try to get radio stations to stop playing the Dixie Chicks' stuff. You don't like them, fine, but don't try to force your views on people who do.*
*Not talking specifically to anyone here, just meaning the public in general.
