I've been watching the Brit Awards online and was not prepared for how moving their tribute to Bowie was...Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman gave the most touching and deeply felt eulogy of him as an artist and human being that reduced me to a puddle.
Annie was reverential and quite obviously emotional when she talked about how impossible it is to refer to him in the past tense when everything he stood for as an artist was always so essentially present. Gary was a personal friend and talked about how Bowie faced his illness with his trademark dignity and hilarious sense of humor intact. He said Bowie emailed him to say the bad news was that he had cancer but the good news was that he got his cheekbones back. I laughed and sobbed at the same time.
His touring band backed Lorde on a faithful and gorgeous rendition of Life On Mars. She schooled Gaga in how to do justice to his work (he was a supporter of hers) without making any of it about herself. It was all just perfect. I feel as if someone has finally and properly laid this man to rest.
I'll find a link and post it here. For now, I'm going to have another cry.

Lorde wrote a really nice post when he passed as well, I'm so glad she got the opportunity. Her performance was beautiful.

You can see her performance hereI liked that so much better than Gaga's performance because it was about Bowie, not about Lorde. She wasn't in Bowie drag, she used her own voice, not some deep "male" voice. The band was Bowie's tour band, which also had significance.

I think I'll have to wait a few days to watch these to give them the attention they deserve, but I'm so glad he got worthy tributes. It's only a few days ago that I got over the travesty that was the Lady Gaga performance. The Grammy producers even said that they had been contacted by many musicians asking to be a part of the Bowie tribute and they told them all no. They were intent on going ahead with their Intel commercial starring their Intel shill, and Bowie's death provided them with an exciting and attention-getting new theme for it. What really bothers me is that the Grammy performance is up on youtube and the Intel commercial is even more integral to the youtube version than it was to the TV version. It's disgusting. I hope Bowie's estate sues everyone involved for using his music for advertising purposes. I read a rumor that Bowie's family blocked the Grammy's from using anything they could - his image, any of his performances or recordings, and even certain song arrangements. The rumor is completely unsubstantiated, but it kind of makes sense - the only image of him was a drawing, and apparently the only sound clip of him singing was a little snippet from a Grammy sound-check that they already owned. (Did he perform at the Grammy's in the 80s?) And I love, love, love that Duncan's tweet about Gaga's competition Lorde is going to drive the Gaga stans mental. I may have to go lurk on one of her psychotic forums and enjoy the meltdowns. They have already said such lovely things about Duncan as he deserves to have his baby born with AIDS, that Gaga loved his father more than he did, and "At the end of the day, his dad is still dead, but Gaga is still getting praise 24/7". I can't imagine what they have in store for him for expressing his gratitude to non-Gagas.

What I take away from the BRIT awards performance was that it is a TRUE tribute by people that loved and worked with him. (and loved to work with him) Annie and Gary gave real, heartfelt speeches and his band, I just cried thinking about this being a final performance of his music by them. I hope it helped with the grieving process.

It would be very interesting indeed if Bowie's family refused to get involved with that Grammy spectacle. I read that his estate collaborated with the Brits producers for their tribute, which would explain why it was all about Bowie and not anyone else's self-serving agenda. It had deep love and gratitude stamped all over it from everyone involved - his friends, his band, his protege, his fellow countrymen in the audience.
Gaga's stans aside (and I really don't give a toss about their obnoxious opinions), I do wonder what she herself thinks of it all. She may be an alleged fan, but the response to these two tributes could not be more different (especially from Duncan). Is she humbled by it? Or is she still so far up her own backside to confuse appropriation for respect? From where I'm sitting, she has only distanced herself from everything he stood for, and a 19-year-old just showed her what his legacy really looks like...spiky strangeness in pursuit of art, not ego.

Iman posted a picture of Lorde with the band on Instagram, and I don't think she had any reaction after the Grammys, so I think it is safe to say the family preferred one tribute over the other.
As for Gaga, I think Gary Oldman made a very important point about Bowie during the tribute - that no matter how seriously he took his art, he never took himself too seriously. I think Gaga takes herself VERY seriously. As such, I'm not sure messages like that get through to her.
