A Lady Gaga tribute is not ideal but it could be worse. Motorhead's Lemmy tribute is going to be performed by Johnny Depp. Along with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. They have a "supergroup" called Hollywood Vampires. They'll be doing a Motorhead song along with one of their own songs. I don't mind Alice Cooper but come on. Johnny Depp!?? Lemmy deserves better than that.

I just know I've been listening to the best of Bowie for weeks now and I just can't believe how much of his music was in my life without me even knowing until he was gone. [br Yes! I've heard so many songs in the past few weeks and been like "this was David Bowie too?" I always loved him from Labyrinth but guess I never realized how truly talented he was.

Awwwww. Duncan's wife is a breast cancer survivor who froze her eggs prior to treatment, so it's touching all on its own too.

Bump for this video of Dave Grohl & Pat Smear visiting Bowie landmarks in LA. Dave tells a sad story about Bowie in the last part. I've always loved that at Bowie's 50th birthday party, all the cool rockers were asked what their favorite Bowie era was and they all gave answers that made them sound cool, but Dave said he likes the David Bowie who wears suits and sings Modern Love.

I saw the Bowie tribute in Greenwich Village while I was in NYC over the weekend. But it was too cold to take pictures (fucking polar vortex).

Thanks for that link, that was both sweet and funny. I'd never actually heard the Nirvana version of The Man Who Sold the World until I finally looked it up last week, so unlike many members of my generation I don't consider it the definitive version. I first heard the original in an episode of Fringe and it just fit the mood of the scene perfectly. The Nirvana version was a good cover though.

My first introduction to The Man Who Sold the World was through Nirvana because I'm that age and MTV aired that Unplugged performance 24/7 after Kurt died. It's not like their version is musically that much different, but I think Nirvana's version occupies a more important place in their catalog than Bowie's version occupies in his own (much larger) catalog. And it seemed to have personal resonance for Kurt in a way that it didn't for Bowie.
I saw a group of music critics discussing Bowie on TV a few weeks ago, and one of them who is my age says he couldn't really understand growing up why Bowie was so revered because he knew Bowie from Dancing in the Streets and his cheeseball late 80s stuff, and that was true of me as well. It was a good thing for me as a 16-year-old to see Nirvana's cover and realize 1) Hey, that's a good song and 2)Kurt Cobain hates almost everybody, but not Bowie.

I was only 11 years old when Kurt Cobain died and didn't really pay much attention to Nirvana, they were just one of the many grunge bands my older brother liked as far as I was concerned. So I never watched their Unplugged or really listened to them at all until much much later.
Bowie I only knew from Labyrinth and whichever of his videos got the Pop Up Video treatment. I think what finally got me interested in him at all was when he was working with Trent Reznor, and they did I'm Afraid of Americans. I was fascinated by that video.

A proper tribute, from Iggy Pop and the Patti Smith Band at the Tibet House benefit concert last night. Video is just a short snippet of The Gene Jeanie and a lovely version of Tonight...must have been a heartening moment.
