I loved him when I was younger but re-discovered him a couple years ago and downloaded everything. I never got to see him live, but thank cripes we have YouTube. Amazing man.

It sounds like he had the privacy he wanted, he was surrounded by family at the end, and he completed a new album. I hope he had felt some sense of completion or control from those things.
What a huge and surprising loss.
I hope his family are able to mourn in private.

I was never a huge fan, and to be perfectly honest didn't care much for most of his music. But his performance in Labyrinth left a huge impression on me as a kid, and I was always aware of his huge influence on culture in so many different ways. He was only a year older than my dad and that's way too freaking young to die.

This clip from the Cher Show is a little bit of strangeness to remember him by.

His newest album, Blackstar, is streaming on Amazon Prime now. It's actually perfect.

I was pissed on my drive into work this morning that all of the Boston radio stations couldn't take time out from their stupid sports debates to discuss a music legend for a few minutes. Only Emerson College radio actually cared.

Only Emerson College radio actually cared. I didn't hear any Bowie music on any of the local stations, when Lennon died his and Beatles music was all you heard. I think a few of our stations are owned by the same company and play a lot of pretaped stuff, (didn't I hear that song at the same time yesterday?) seems like someone could've gone in and pull something up off their archives or the internet though.

Sirius XM (satellite radio) is playing Bowie today and taking phone calls from listeners on its Classic Vinyl station, number 26. If you are a Sirius subscriber you can stream this online too.

I heard "Under Pressure" and "Let's Dance" a couple of times, which apparently are the Clear Channel-approved Bowie songs. I think you are right that all of those Clear Channel stations have everything pre-programmed - which is why their DJ's know nothing and care nothing about music. I don't think they needed to halt everything to play Bowie songs (although that would have been nice) it's that the inane DJ chatter was still all about yesterday's football game.

I have been listening to British radio on my phone all morning and they are doing great. Absolute radio, if you can find it.
Of note--they have played Absolute Beginners, Changes, Ashes to Ashes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Man Who Sold the World, and many others. It is awesome.
