Apparently she's off in the Tasmanian mountains filming her own documentary. That's why there is no official comment yet, the next of kin hasn't been notified.

There have been countless stories about him being dead over the years, so I want to wait until there's some sort of official statement before I believe it.

I don't think it's a rumor because CNN has it and so does MSNBC.

This update[/color] says his family has been notified. I'm surprised by how sad this has made me.

The Great Barrier Reef has also sorts of nasty little critters floating around in it that specialize in being super-venomous. You are actually supposed to wear these really unattractive body suits when you go in the water so that you don't get stung by lethal jellyfish. So contrary to the "where the bloody hell are ya?" ad, she shouldn't/wouldn't be wearing an itsy-bitsy bikini in that water. And while I'm guessing that Steve wasn't wearing a bikini, he probably flouted a few general guidelines when shooting - to the get the best footage - until the sting-ray decided it had had enough. Very sad ... but those are dangerous, albeit pretty, waters.

I seem to remember hearing (on some nature show, I guess) that stingrays are considered to be more dangerous than the much larger manta rays.
I'm not sure mantas even have stingers and I believe they are the gentle giant types of the ray family. I've seen tv footage of people who'd travelled to some vacation/tourist spot (I think) where they could swim with mantas. I don't know if that type of thing is allowed with stingrays.
