Aw, man this is so sad! I always liked the guy, he was a typical, Aussie larakin and reminded me of a lot of some of my friends parents. Man, I feel really teary just thinking about his poor wife and kids. I just saw footage of the family boarding a plane on the news and man, poor bastards, as if this wasn't bad enough... they are going to be under media scrutiny 24/7. Sigh, and to think he died one day after fathers day. The last one he got to spend with his kids. One of my friends is good friends with his cousin and had met Steve countless of times and she always said that he was such a genuine bloke and what you see is what you got. Such a tragedy! His poor family.
As for the footage of Steve dying, my sister said that she saw him being pulled onto the boat on the news. So, I'd imagine it wont be long before it's leaked.
Being that this is obviously huge news in Australia, every 10 seconds images of him and his family (particularly with his daughters) are being shown and gawd, it really pulls the heart strings. I can't even believe how sad this has made me.

Although I wasn't a fan of his - I am really saddened to hear about Steve today. Here in Australia everyone is in shock big time. My thoughts are with his young family. RIP Steve.

It's weird, we all kind of expected this to happen oneday but it's very shocking. I loved his tv show. His love of his family and animals knew no bounds. I'm sure his zoo will go on. Also, he named his daughter after his beloved dog didn't he? I know some people may think thats wrong but I just goes to show how much he loved animals. In our family, we always say something bad always happens in the world on labor day weekend. Guess its right this year. I can't believe how much this is bothering me. It's making me cry. RIP Steve. Take care of all the animals up there mate.

For some unknown reason, I was thinking about his ESPN promo when I woke up this morning and before I turned on the computer. That promo was one of the funniest ones in awhile.
ETA: LaughingGravy. I lost your post when I tried to copy and paste it to this thread.

I'm Australian and I admit that I've always been rather embarrassed by the image Steve Irwin perpetuated of Australians to foreigners and the mere mention of his name usually elicits a groan, and it was only when I heard this news that I realised how proud I actually was to have him as an Aussie! He did some amazing work for animals and the environment.
It seems so ironic that it almost can't be true... He spends years wrestling with crocodiles, snakes and all kinds of things, and then gets killed by a STINGRAY?
So sad.
Much love and condolences to his family and friends, especially his wife and two kids.

I always thought something would happen since he seemed a bit wreckless, but now that it has happened its still shocking. I liked the guy and I truly feel for his wife and kids. Very sad.

I heard this on NPR this morning, and was shocked as well as ticked off at Steve. I can understand getting into the muck with wildlife, but given the fact that A) Australia seems to be the home of some of the more ridiculously poisonous creatures on the planet and B) he had 2 little kids, he should have known better. It's all moot now, but when I guy becomes a father, he needs to cut back on the dangerous stuff.

It seems though that he died while filming the relatively harmless stingray for a documentary for his daughter. He had taken time out of filming his own documentary on much more dangerous creatures. It seems like an extraordinary case of bad luck to have been killed by a stingray.

It's one of those celeb deaths that seems obvious, but at the same time, I'm stunned. He's only 44 and he's leaving behind a wife young children. I feel for his family. What a horrible way to die. The stingray apparently got him in the heart. Yikes.
