The actress who starred in the independent films Trust and The Unbelievable Truth was found dead in her office Wednesday, apparently hanging from a rod in the bathroom. Her husband, Andrew Ostroy, found her. She was 40, mother of a 3 year old. Police say they believe it is suicide and there are reports that there as a note but that it was removed or destroyed. What's odd is that there was a shoeprint in the bathtub and it did not belong to Ms. Shelly. Her family is now coming out and saying she was not suicidal. Police questioned her husband for 5 hours but apparently don't suspect foul play. Here are a couple of articles from the Gothamist which have links to additional stories: Indie Actress Adrienne Shelley Found Dead--November 3rd Family Says Actress Was Not Suicidal--November 4th

She looks familiar but I haven't seen either of those films.

I haven't seen them either. On the front page of the New York Post her photo showed her having red hair.

She also directed the upcoming movie Waitress starring Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Andy Griffith, and Jeremy Sisto. Her daughter was only three. Damn, that's awful.

I haven't seen her in either those movies either, but I'll always remember her fondly from a little bit of fluff called Big Girls Don't Cry, They Get Even, featuring the totally adorable Dan Futterman.
That is just so sad. I hope they figure out what happened.

That's horrible news. The thing with the footprint is weird. Gives me the chills and sends my brain right into A&E "Investigative Reports" mode.

Oh my god, that is terrible.
I'm not going to jump to conclusions and say that there was foul play. Doesn't necessarily mean someone killed her. If someone did, I hope he's caught and prosecuted. If she killed herself, then that's a damn shame.

I remember when she was "One to Watch" in Sassy magazine. How sad for her daughter.

Aw, this makes me so sad! I loved her in "The Unbelievable Truth," and saw her perform in a couple off-off-Broadway shows after that. She was so beautiful and such an interesting actress, the kind of person who seemed so cool to hang out with.
Deepest condolences to her family for their terrible loss.

Man, she was such a big thing in the early 80s. Really very sad.
