Hahha. I understand the point of this little piece of heaven on earth is to hate Natalie, but still -- some of the logic used in a few of the arguments is lacking. It's stretching the available evidence sometimes to come up with the reasoning for accusations against her: for example by mixing Natalie's quotes with the interviewer's words (or the re-hasher's words, most of it is just copy and paste journalism) and then projecting their own beliefs (or the writer's beliefs) on to Natalie's motivations. The story from the tabloid about her suddenly speaking in fluent German is really funny. It sounds like next she might start speaking in tongues. But it seems illogical to somehow blame that tabloid's claim on Portman. Also, by doing a little background checking, we can see it's fairly plausible that Natalie Portman does speak at least some Japanese and French. According to information taken from her 1999 high school graduation program, she took AP classes and graduated with honors and awards in French and Japanese. Didn't she study those languages in college, as well? So saying that she doesn't speak French and Japanese is probably not true either. But that's okay. I realize people don't always use logic or factual evidence to get their Hate on. I do agree that venturing a hand down into the ass-crack region while standing in a public viewing area is not an elegant move at all. That picture really makes me laugh. The language bit is first hand info from many students who went to school with her, so I'm not making any suppositions there. Secondly, she can be blamed for the German bit, because although tabloids do just make up stuff about people, the positive stuff is generally planted by publicists, which means the star had a hand in it. Also, considering her past behavior (claiming she was a finalist at Intel, etc.), Natalie's definitely been know to embellish her accomplishments.

I find her so beautiful. Hopefully (unlike Ashely Judd) the pretenciousness will fall away as she gets older.

Ah fooey. Lots of people speak a second language, it doesn't necessarily mean they do it well. I speak appalling French as a secondary language, and some days, my primary language, English, is worse than my French.
The reason it grates so when Hershlag mentions it (or any other vaguely academic persuit for that matter) is that she's not really doing anything that different to any other 20 something - travel, edumacation etc, and she has the means to do it with little difficulty.
I despise the sycophantic articles that all these 20 somethings get. Their brains are barely formed and they're pontificating on the hardships of existence. SHUT UP! You've got more money than I will probably LOOK at in my life, let alone spend, and the resources to do whatever you want. If acting is so hollow and unfulfilling, go herd mountain goats in India.
It IS possible to be involved in making movies AND not share every barely formed thought in every interview.
Carry on.

I hear you. I get so sickened by hearing how these snotty starlets complain and yet will take off every bit of clothing to stay famous for a few minutes more. They do not have it hard in any way, aand they need to stop complaining. Now about their brains not being fully formed, well, I highly doubt they have any.

Britney Spears experienced the same thing. And now look where she is.

Heh. They can get their kit off as much as they like, so long as it's backed up by more than modicum of talent. I think I've seen NP's modicum, (wow that sounds a lot ruder than it should) and I don't think it's grown since The Professional. (How is it that so many movies are renamed depending on where they're being released?)
Like so many other pretty actresses, she has such a lack of humor and warmth. She's like a pretty, cold fish. I just can't get that worked up about someone who seems so set on cultivating such a proper image. Where's the nasty? Or the biting wit? When's she's not stink palming, she comes across in interviews as so dry and darling.
Her scenes in Closer, where she is emotionally destraught remindered me of her character in Garden state. Two vastly different characters and they seemed so similar because Portman only has a simple method of conveying emotional turmoil and upset.

There is a difference between proper and just being a jerk. Royalty, royalty like queens and kings are usually more affable. Besides, who is she to act so snotty? She's the one who bumped and grinded against a guy on her birthday wearing stiletto heels. On a table no less. Seriously she's beginning to chillingly remind me of a younger Gwyneth Paltrow . The ass kissing press, the upper class upbringing, the pretentiousness.

Well I guess I'm in the minority in this thread. But I adore Natalie Portman. I think she is talented, charming, gorgeous, and intelligent. I have liked most of her films. I hope her career has longevity.

Yeah but she's not obnoxious, just pretentious. I think she likes the idea of being an intellectual actor as opposed to a celebrity.
Meh, not so racy - I don't find her sexy! Cold fish.
If there's an article in Vogue analysing her wardrobe by a writer tripping over her tongue to kiss Hershlags ass, we're in for an annoying few years.

I just watched Closer last night. How did she get nomintaed for that role? It seemed to me that she took her Garden State character and added a heavy dose of sexuality. Personally, I find Nat non-offending and rather like her but the accolades for this performance is undeserving.
OT I do think Clive Owen was great in this movie.
