Jesus Christ bananas that scared the shit out of me. Thank God for the Peter Scolari joke to calm me down. I don't get the joke. Does anyone care to explain? The Peter Scolari thing is a 'Bosom Buddies' joke. Tom Hanks leaves that show and goes on to win 2 Oscars. Meanwhile, Peter pretty much peaked with 'Newhart'. Reporting that people died as a joke, isn't funny.

Peter Scolari was Tom's co-star on Bosom Buddies. He was also considered to go on and have an amazing career leaving Hanks in the dirt. Yeah. That worked out well. ETA- FotoStoreSheila beat me to it.

Aww man, I did enjoy that show. Nothing quite holds the magic of two men dressing in drag for cheap apartments. And watching it, I always assumed that Peter would be the break-out star. Then he went to Newhart and it seemed like he was going places but then Tom broke ahead of him.
Peter is Rhoda to Tom's Mary. Tom wins academy awards, Peter gets the role of "dad" on an episode of What I Like About You.

In my opinion? Bosom Buddies was one of the funniest damn sitcoms on television. I never used to miss it. MrPancake, it ran from roughly 1981 to 1984, and both Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari were pretty unknown. It was sort of like a Some Like It Hot scenario - they played two struggling young guys in NYC who couldn't find a cheap apartment. Their friend Amy, played by the wonderful, and unfortunately, late Wendy Jo Sperber ( who also played Marty McFly's sister in Back to the Future), tells them about an apartment in her building. Turns out her building is a women's-only residence hotel. So they dress like women, a la Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in SLIH, in order to have a place to live ( as Jensational just explained while I was yakking away!). They re-run it every so often on TBS at 6:00 AM on Saturday mornings - you never know when it's on. You just get lucky sometimes! I think the thing that really made me go OUCH! for Peter Scolari was that the last acting job I ever saw him in was the teensy tiny cameo appearance he had in the Tom Hanks vehicle, That Thing You Do! ( which I LOVE!) as the host of the Hollywood variety show that The Wonders appear on. Tom Hanks went and made it so big that he was able to throw a bone to his old co-star!

I know! I can't imagine that Peter was like "Thanks Tom! Thanks! I really appreciate this!" while thinking "He couldn't have given me a bigger part huh. That guy with the pizza place by the airport has more lines than me. Hell, I could played that one kid's dad with the appliance store. But noooo, I get one line and five seconds. What the hell happened to my life? I should be married to Rita Wilson!"

Hanks to the casting director: "I am GOD on the set of this movie! I'm the writer, the director AND the star, and you will cast him! First of all, because he's my friend, but mostly, because he hasn't eaten in three days!"

India, Re Bosom Buddies: You forgot Donna Dixon as Tom Hank's love interest. She was smoking hot at the time and married Dan Ackroyd back in 83. I never understood how he got her. But they've been together ever since.
