Tom Hanks is my nemesis...well, I'm pretty sure he's unaware of it, so it's kind of a one way thing. I HATE HIM!!! And I can't even explain why. It started with the winning of back to back Oscars for what I considered sub-par yet Academy-buttkissing performances and has just grown over the years...as the love of the general public has increased, so has my hatred. His taking part in the film version of the worst book ever written was like a nexus of hatred for me...after that I think I burned out a bit. But my loathing will rise like a phoenix from the ashes! Yes, I am aware I sound like a crazy person. My friends and family have learned to ignore this oddity of my personality.

I love his movies, when I was a kid I had Splash, The Money Pit, Big, A League of Their Own and Toy Story on constant repeat. Oh, God. I always forget A League of Their Own. "Are you crying?! There's no crying in BASEBALL!!" I absolutely adore The Money Pit. That was in constant rotation at my house as well. I haven't seen any of the trailers for Angels and Demons, but if the movie adaptation is anything like The DaVinci Code, I'll pass. (I actually liked the book of Angels and Demons, but The DaVinci Code was a mess all the way around. I think I fell asleep within two minutes of watching it.)

oh god, the Burbs. I quote from that from time to time and only my husband knows what I'm talking about.
"Ray, you're chanting." (I say this to hubby cuz his name is also Ray)

Tom Hanks has one of those EveryMan kind of faces, the kind you automatically like. It's the same kind of likability Jimmy Stewart had, and Will Smith. If he were to run for public office, I betcha he'd win on tha basis alone.
That being said, he's damn lucky he's a guy in showbiz instead of a female. He hasn't aged particularly well. I've watched Meg Ryan, Shelly Long and the rest of his on-screen love interests over the years try and hold off their career downward spirals with plastic surgery, and I can only imagine what Hanks would look like if he had gone that route. Think of what Buffy Wilson might look like three decade later... be afraid.

He was fantastic in A League of their Own, and I say that as someone who really hates that movie on principle. I mean, it's a great movie from the standpoint of it was very well done and the baseball league is a great story, but I hatehatehate the ending. Whiny, bratty, childish, obnoxious Kitt wins the big game, has lots of kids and is shown to be happy in her old age (all the while never learning how to be gracious), while kind, mature, empathetic Dotty ends up miserable, lonely, and unfulfilled. Ugh, makes me ill just thinking about it.
My favorites of his are Cast Away (I cried so hard when Wilson "died"), Toy Story, and The Green Mile. And yes, I do like You've Go Mail; I think it's sweet.

It's funny you'd say that because today we let the kids watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I thought Dick Van D.yke were just so likable and the first contemporary actor that popped into my mind was Tom Hanks.. he's in the same league as Dick Van D.yke and Jimmy Stewart. ETA: I forgot that this site won't let me use the work D.yke (minus the period).

The Money Pit is comic genius. I fucking love that film. I forgot about it.
The only thing I really hate about him is the (very well supported) rumor that he fucks around on Rita constantly, and not discreetly.
And, of course, Forrest Gump is the worst movie ever made. That screenwriter should be fucking shot, but that's not Hanks's fault.

Love Forrest Gump. Great movie and totally deserving of all accolades.
Love League of Their Own. Don't get what you mean at all, ximena, about your interpretation-she looks like she has three kids and the rest are grand kids. Kitt is definitely allowed happiness even if she was an immature shithead when she was younger, which DOES happen. People change over the course of their lives. Dottie lost her husband, which does happen. If you watch the beginning, it shows quite clearly that she has family and is not alone and seems to have a good relationship with her grandkids.

Yes, I am aware I sound like a crazy person. My friends and family have learned to ignore this oddity of my personality. You know, I understand this. And I sympathize. I don't think he deserved those Oscars, but... I'm a sucker. He's got that familiar, everyman face and he works on me on a sentimental level. I think he's hilarious in comedies and mostly adequate in dramas. But he just gets to me. If he's emoting away at sadness, I'll get misty-eyed.* So I know what you're talking about. He ain't all that as an actor technically, but what he does works.** *Tom Hanks and Sally Field. I have a Pavlovian reaction to their faces crumpling up in tears. It destroys me. **You know, there's something kind of disturbing about this little revelation. It's almost like people voting for a Presidential candidate because they feel like he's the kind of guy they can have a beer with. But without the potential for political, social and economic disaster. I heard also that he cheats on Rita Wilson, but that she has her own on the side.
