I think it depends on the situation. If you're trying to create some sense of melodrama so you can blather on in interviews about how "private" you are, that's one huge eye-roll (Though at least with Chris Martin, he's consistent about that. He's been handling it like that with all his girlfriends.). But the Cumberbatch situation for example? For years IMO he was way too nice about certain parts of his fandom who had clearly gone round the bend, and he's had lots of problems with stalkers and inappropriate fan behaviour throughout the years. It was a good thing that he finally did that interview where he called them all out for the delusional stalkers they are and made it absolutely clear to them that they'd crossed boundaries and he'd protect himself against them if necessary.
Or that absurd Fassbender and Vikander situation. I'm absolutely certain that nothing they do will ever calm down the crazies. If they show themselves publically, it's because they're famewhores doing a showmance. If they don't show themselves publically, it's because it's all just a fake showmance. No matter what they do, the haters will always believe in their conspiracy theories, there's no way to "appease" them. It's their firm belief that these two barely known actors (outside the industry) are in a 3 year long scam where they meet up with each other all over the planet, never call any paparazzi, do the bare minimum of press even for their one little joint movie and get absolutely nothing out of that relationship PR-wise. Like, it would be the worst, most incompetent showmance ever. Yet you've got hoards of lunatics all over various forums and social media invested in that conspiracy theory. It's got nothing to do with the two real people anymore, it's about being attached to a certain narrative.

The leader of the Fassbender/Vikander conspiracy theories has taken a month-long break from her tumblr. She claims it's because she needs to concentrate on school, but I think she and her followers have run out of steam. Her predictions of a massive Oscar campaign followed by a post-Oscar season breakup were wrong and even the crazies are having a hard time portraying their ongoing, low-key relationship as a huge PR fest.
But this woman has also been a Marion Cotillard stan for years and maintains all kinds of conspiracy theories about her, so she'll be back I'm sure.

So many things to comment on. 1. The head of the Outlander shenanigans once 'led' the Robsten fanbase (she was the one who was convinced that they were married and had a couple of kids).... so honestly the article didn't surprise me. All I know is that our digital and PR teams HATE the fan-base because they're never satisfied and feel so incredibly entitled. Sam and Cait are not dating. Never have, and I think it's safe to say, never will. But the crazies are having an effect on them. They're much less gung-ho to do things for us now, and I can't say that I blame them. Every event is exhausting. Just so much crazy. 2. I too see similarities with Cumberbatch and his crazy fans. I'm reminded of the skeptics who still think his marriage is a sham, but erroneously thought he'd dump his famewhore wife by Dr. Strange (they gave the relationship two years). When that didn't happen, I think they started to lose interest....(good riddance!) But they will never admit they were wrong. AND they're still butthurt that he chose "that kind of woman". And I still don't know what that means... 3. I remember the Meg Ryan/Danielle Spencer hate well. It was vicious. Misogyny at its finest. Meg was a whore and Danielle was a doormat. If the Crowe fandom taught me anything, it was this: Actors are imperfect people no matter the image-- and at some point the illusion of who you think they are vs who they really are will come to light, and you'll be left thinking "WTF was I thinking?" I really loved him in Gladiator but was totally over him by the time he threw the phone. Now if I'm attracted to an actor, I try to stay out of their private life because I don't want the fantasy to die. What amuses me is that "fans" will take one moment in time for an actor/actress/singer and based on a soundbite(s) or interview(s) hold them accountable for an eternity. They're not allowed to change their opinion, or grow as a person-- ever. They are that "type" of celebrity forever. For example-- if an actor says "I'm a private person and would never whore my personal life out for a project", but is then seen out and about with their SO for a "pap stroll" or "pap strolls", then all of a sudden, they're whoring out their personal life, and are hypocrites. "They simply can't have it both ways when it's convenient for them". Ya know, sometimes their management team suggests a pap stroll, and they comply because they have a project coming out and it's easy publicity... and a benign action, and sometimes....the paps just get lucky. It happens. I don't think either action makes them horrible people or hypocritical. Now don't get me wrong-- some celebs are incredibly calculating, and love to live their life in the public eye, even when they protest that they don't. It's their MO-- and has been for YEARS and YEARS. But I'll never believe that every action taken by celebs is part of some "master plan". There are just too many variables in real life to contend with and you can't control how people will feel on any given day. It constantly amazes me that nuance is never allowed in this social media age. Everything is black or white, and I feel social media intensifies these feelings of sticking to a certain narrative. I find it eye-roll worthy that so many of these fans are experts on how the game is played including interpreting body language, personal publicity, and marketing of the brand; Furthermore they have friends 'who know' that these relationships are shams. Really? Cause I know high powered publicists at several studios and agencies, and they're barely keeping their head above water with the never ending wave of work that crosses their desks on an hourly basis, and don't have time to concoct elaborate "PR based relationships" for every client and then keep up with the conspiracy theories. Gossip and speculation can be fun, but more and more the speculation aspect of it is becoming down right scary.

They all just sit at home waiting for publicists to call and set up "pap strolls" for them 100% of the time.

I had a conversation with Emmy Rossum a couple of years ago, and she said that the paps put tracking devices on her car. It's a common practice. You can get them taken off, but first you need to know that they're there. Top paparazzi make high six figures a year. They have no problem breaking the law, and they make friends with as many people as they can so they can get inside scoop. My co-worker who is in events said that at one Outlander event they had everyone else staying at one hotel and Sam in another under an assumed name, and within 45 minutes of checking in, stalkers and paps knew the alias and location... and my co-worker was like "How the fuck did they find out that information so quickly?" The planning that takes place for any personal event associated with the show is mind-boggling. And almost every time, some crazy person finds out the information, and blabs it to everyone within ear shot.

I'm not much of a shipper. I have my favorite couples in a tv series (e.g., Buffy/Angel) but I'm not going to go crazy if it doesn't happen. It all depends on the writing for me. Is their being together/apart believable or just a ploy for ratings or lazy writing because it creates a conflict? But I'm always creeped out by fans who ship the actors instead of the characters. That just seems to step over some boundary for me. I remember the crazies on Grey's Anatomy who insisted that Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo were in a real relationship even though both actors were married at the time. The thread got so creepy the mod closed it down. Also, remember the tin hat fans from LoTR, who were insistent that Elijah Wood and Dominic Monijan (sp?) were in a relationship but had to keep it a secret because of homophobia. It evolved to the point where these fans were claiming that Elijah and Dominic were communicating to them through their clothes. Like, if Elijah was on a talk show and wore a blue shirt and then a few days later Dominic was interviewed and he was wearing a blue shirt, this was the actors' way of confirming their relationship to the fans. They were so out of control that at a Comic Con one of these nut jobs photoshopped a gay porn still so that it looked like the two men were Elijah and Dominic and he asked Elijah to sign it. This was supposed to be the grand signal. If Elijah signed it, it was definite confirmation that he and Dominic were a couple. He refused to sign it so, of course, they came up with all kinds of excuses why he wouldn't. None of which were that it was extremely tasteless.

This makes me think of Taylor Swift. She was trying like hell to live within a master plan, but she couldn't keep it going because of the real life variable named Kanye. Nobody tells Kanye how to feel on any given day! Or minute! Or second!

That fanbase is STILL out there and I believe the baby count is now up to three.
What I find crazy is that when Robsten actually was together they, for the most part, tried to really be private. Now these nuts are using that as proof that they're still together and just are so savvy they don't get caught together. Ya know, despite the fact Rob has been with another woman for the last couple years and Kristen is constantly papped with her girlfriend du jour. It's like it doesn't really matter what celebs do--the crazy fans will find a way to fit that into whatever conspiracy theory they're married to.

This is really creepy. No wonder Elijah stayed low-key for the past 10 years.

People seem to think these days that the paparazzi never, ever go out and look for celebrities. They all just sit at home waiting for publicists to call and set up "pap strolls" for them 100% of the time. Or that the celebs do it themselves. My co-worker who is in events said that at one Outlander event they had everyone else staying at one hotel and Sam in another under an assumed name, and within 45 minutes of checking in, stalkers and paps knew the alias and location... and my co-worker was like "How the fuck did they find out that information so quickly?"The planning that takes place for any personal event associated with the show is mind-boggling. And almost every time, some crazy person finds out the information, and blabs it to everyone within ear shot. That's scary, mutagen. I am one who thinks that the press will go to any length to stalk celebrities and get pictures. And yeah, Crowe fans were just as resourceful as Outlander fans. There was a die-hard bunch who seemed to know EVERYTHING; where he was filming, where he was staying, where he was going to promote his films. They would travel to L.A.and line up all day for The Tonight Show and New York for Letterman. There was one woman from Scotland who followed him around the world, even to the set of filming that Ridley Scott wine movie (I've blocked it out), another who, if I remember correctly, was driving through the night on some road in Northern Ontario, Canada to get to his next concert (by his terrible, terrible band, lol). It was late August, and I was sure she was gonna run into a freak snowstorm. Most of the Crowe fans I saw were not so much of the entitled fan type. A few people would try to make the argument that "he gave up his privacy when he tried to become famous", but they were shot down pretty quickly on the message boards I knew about. I was pretty well over him as a fan once the phone throwing incident happened. Honestly, his band was soooo bad, and he thought they were soooo good, that I lost more and more respect for him as time went by, lol. The board that I posted on had a huge Off Topic section, where people decamped from the main fandom to talk about politics and history, news, other TV shows, books they read. Some wonderful woman posted a link to chicknitsdotcom, and that sent me down a rabbit hole into the world of knitting blogs. There were huge threads devoted to the TV show Lost. There was even a lot of discussion about George Clooney's film Perfect Storm, and if you can imagine this (given the sour feelings between Crowe and Clooney nowadays), there were even Russell Crowe fans hoping that the movie was a big hit for Clooney. Meg Ryan did indeed throw a wrench into the works. It seemed to me to be mostly the press who painted her as a Scarlet Woman, but most of the fans I knew, not so much. The line was drawn between people who believe she dumped him, and people who believed he dumped her. I still think she dumped him.
