Yeah, season one is definitely not the best. Totally turned me off the whole show and then I rediscovered it in season four and only went back and watched them all later on. Season 2-6 were all fine by me - I wasn't a fan of the first or last seasons.

"Hush" is easily the scariest BtVS ep. The Gentlemen...(shudder)

I kind of loved season one. I appreciated it even more after the show was over.
Yeah, it's campy. But their lives weren't so messed up yet. There was a good blend of the good and the bad. There was so much hope. Those young, happy, smiling teenagers.
And their lives turned out to be so crappy. Makes me sad.
I must admit that I was a major Buffy/Angel shipper back in the day. But now, I'm not so into them. Way too melodramatic. But I hated Buffy/Spike even more. Time has not changed that at all.
Mainly because I hated Spike after he got his chip. And became the "comic relief". I thought the writers took the easy way out with his character. He would have been so much more interesting if they had kept him a "grey hat".
Joss did it so much better on Angel the Series. Lyndsey McDonald is what Spike should have been.

Season 2 and 3 were amazing. I LOVED all the S2 couples (Giles/Jenny, Buffy/Angel, Xander/Cordy, Willow/Oz), and the episodes were so good. My faves are Passion, Surprise, Innocence, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, I Only Have Eyes for You, and of course Becoming parts 1 and 2. All of these episodes stand out to me, even after all these years. And I can't even pick one episode in S3, because I loved them all. I quit watching when it moved to UPN and in a way I am glad I did. I will always remember how great it was during it's glory days.
kathy- I LOVED Lyndsey. He was such a complex character. I was a HUGE Lyndsey/Darla shipper.

I've introduced a bunch of people to this show, and I always skip a bunch of episodes in season 1 because it's just soooo ott campy. People are always like, "Eh, it's okay" when we're in season 1, but after that they get really into it. Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. It's not bad at all, but I'm just not captivated yet. Thanks everyone for the recommendations to stick with it. The last Season 1 disc goes in the mail tomorrow and I will start on Season 2. One thing I noticed about Season 1 was that almost all of the episodes are self-contained, kind of like a Law and Order, which isn't necessarily bad, but not what I was expecting. I think that's why I have not exactly been on the edge of my seat between episodes. Each episode, she and her friends fight a new vampire or demon and then that's it. There wasn't much progression of any real story; even the Angel story barely progressed. Just an observation, and I guess this changes somewhat in the coming seasons.

Yeah, Season 1 is really episodic. But Seasons 2 and 3 have some of the best season-long arcs I've ever seen. I didn't really appreciate them until I watched shows like Supernatural try to do a similar season-arc-incorporating-villains-of-the-week and fail spectacularly. But Season 2 really starts to utilize the whole ensemble cast and manages to balance the recurring villains and ongoing storyline with weekly monsters and hijinks. And the actors settle much better into their characters and find a fit with the humor, I think.
I rewatched Season 1 awhile ago, for the first time since Buffy was actually on, and WOW was David Boreanaz bad. Especially in the pilot. Those are some of the weirdest fucking line readings I've ever heard. He sounds like an alien. Or like he learned his lines phonetically and has no idea what he's actually saying. His inflections are just so bizarre. I don't think he's a brilliant thespian now or anything, but at least he can convincingly portray a normal human now.
Also agreed about the camp factor in Season 1. At times S1 reminds me too much of the Buffy movie, of which I was not a fan (blasphemy, I know). One of the things I love about Buffy is the way it pokes fun at genre conventions, but I prefer the tongue-in-cheek approach. I couldn't get one of my best friends, a horror fan, into Buffy because he watched some of the first season and was annoyed by the fact that he felt like it NEVER took itself seriously. Which I actually get. I think the show works the best when they allow some pathos in. Like, the trio's friendship and humor in the face of all the death and darkness doesn't really count for much if you don't actually acknowledge and let people feel the death and darkness at some point.

For anyone that has Netflix, all the seasons have just became available to stream instantly! I have a Roku which streams it to my TV, so now I won't have to wait for the DVD's to be mailed.

And this is totally Off-Topic, but I see that you hail from Clearwater, Kathy- I was just there this weekend. Beautiful beach!

Yesssssss!! I love my Roku. I haven't been able to find my DVDs since we moved. (And haven't yet unpacked all the way since we're just renting.) I've been watching BtVS again on Logo (and partially MTV). Man, some of it was REALLY bad, but some of it was so genius. (I watched Something Blue) last night. Awesome.

I've always wondered did you get your username from the show Bitca? Buffy: She's a real B-i-t-c-h. Xander: Bitca? Buffy/Giles/Willow: Stares horrified at Xander.Or something like that.
