I think Cate's one of those people who look great from some angles and awful from another. I always thought she was rather plain, then I saw her Lord of the Rings and she was gorgeous - though that could have been due entirely to make up and lighting. But ever since then, I've been on the fence about her looks.

snarklyn, mrpancake, please, please, please, come sit by me! Word to everything said by the both of you.
It's not that I hate Cate, Kate or Ewan. I just am unable to see the stupendousness of their physical attractiveness or the supposed towering level of their talent.

I agree that Cate is more unsual and interesting in the looks department than beautiful. But her acting (based on Elizabeth and LoTR) and her off-screen personality (or persona, maybe she's secretly horrible) raise her in my estimation above others who might have more going in the looks dept. Ditto on the off-screen persona for Kate Winslet too.

I like Cate because of her versatility. She's never played a similar character twice--for each movie she's in she creates this unique, well-developed person. And she kicks ass in pretty much everything! There are some actors who I feel have a limited number of roles they can play--this is how I feel about Tom Hanks. And some actors resort to scenery-chewing to differentiate characters, but Cate never has. Anyway, that's my personal opinion, and I'm sure not everyone is going to agree, but that's why she's always been one of my favorites.

I am fairly certain that the only reason that I hold Cate in such high esteem is because of her performance in Elizabeth. I have enjoyed her other performances and would probably like her as an actress, but I am a fan because of Elizabeth. She is amazing in the film and I would encourage anyone who is on the fence about her to watch the movie (unless you have seen it and don't like it or something). She isn't classically beautiful (in real life or in the film) but she is just luminous and gorgeous in Elizabeth. Her performance is excellent as well. She just gets everything right.

I can respect the love, especially the admiration for her admitted talent. But I just do not see the pretty.
See, I thought she made a fug Galadriel, but I admit I had high expectations for that role based on her description in the books. Maybe 'fug' is too harsh; but I just hadn't expected a...plain depiction of Galadriel, the world class beauty.

I agree completely. I like her work a lot and I think she is a unique-looking actress, very intelligent, and not a famewhore, so there's a lot to like. But it was Elizabeth that totally took my breath away, not to mention that it was her first lead role, right? What an astonishing debut. I still haven't gotten over Fishstick taking the Oscar over her.

She really made me sit up and notice in Oscar and Lucinda. Her and Ralph Fiennes were terrific together. The movie is very quirky which is another reason I like her. Of course I love Elizabeth, she should have won the Oscar IMHO. But I saw O&L first and then went searching for all her other movies. Luckily Elizabeth came out soon thereafter.

Elizabeth is definitely her most memorable performance IMO, but I've loved her in almost everything she's been in. I loved her in Bandits, Veronica Guerin, (definitely worth a rental if you haven't seen it) and even Pushing Tin, where she played so against type.
I can see why people think she isn't that attractive. I think she is, but not conventionally so.
