Dang. A similar thing -- abrupt and initially-undisclosed suspension of production -- happened just over six years ago when The Daily Show's Bill Clarey killed himself. It's not gonna be good news.

TCR staffers have just issued a release that says that the suspension is due to an emergency in Colbert's family. Speculation is that his mom may have fallen ill.

Aww. I hope everything turns out OK. Monday night's show seemed weird to me now that I think about it. None of the subjects he satirized were anything newsworthy that occurred while the show was on break the week earlier. Seemed like they were phoning it in - but Tuesday's show was fine. Weird.
I feel like a heathen for saying this, but I really think the Colbert Report is a much better written show that the Daily Show. It irritates me that TCR keeps getting beaten for Emmys by TDS.

Oh, that's too bad. I was hoping he had to run off for a surprise visit to Afghanistan or something.
I've heard speculation about his mom. She's in her 90s, so it is certainly a possibility. I hope if a family member is ill, it's from something like old age. He's already had shit luck losing family members tragically (his father and two of his brothers were killed in a plane crash when he was just a kid).

I hope everything is OK, too. He's so close to his family and he's always made it seem like his mom is a real foundation for him and his siblings.

I agree wholeheartedly. Colbert's show is consistently in the stratosphere whereas Stewart's only usually is. But where Jon really exceeds Stephen is in the interviews. The Colbert character gets in the way of so many potentially-fascinating discussions that I can no longer be bothered watching that part of the show.

I think the first half of TCR where he's behind the desk is funnier than the first half of TDS. Sometimes TDS is so focused on politics that the comedy seems to take a back seat, and the correspondent segments are very hit-or-miss. Jon Stewart is a much better interviewer though.

Agreed with all of this. The only time Colbert actually does a good interview is when he loves the subject so much that he pretty much drops the character. Elvis Costello immediately comes to mind, he's clearly a huge fan of his.

Agreed that Jon Stewart does better interviews than Colbert. Now, Stephen Colbert the actual person could probably do great interviews but then tone of the show would be ruined. I wouldn't be surprised if the interview section is what's keeping TCR from beating out TDS in the writing category at the Emmys.
This or if the guest truly gets Colbert schtick and is just as witty as Stephen. For example, Stephen never dropped character in his interview with Neil Gaiman but the interview still worked because Gaiman is rather quick witted and could keep up with Stephen. Gaiman is one of the few people that caused Stephen to briefly break character.

Oh I forgot about the Gaiman interview, that was a good one. I have very little interest in him but he does do good TV interviews. His spot on Craig Ferguson was also really good.
