The most I've heard is the dubious speculation that he was upset over their breakup, but I haven't really heard anything in the vein of people actually blaming Kate Hudson.
Personally though, I agree with your take. The breakup and the suicide attempt were probably both symptoms of the same problem, not cause and effect.

Maybe he is the heroin addict blind vice? I had a professor tell us that if they don't get clean, they either overdose or kill themselves. The pain of such a addiction, or worse, the pain of trying to get off and stay off can drive them to take their lives. Very sad.

My friend emailed me about hearing about this on the radio station on a local entertainment report this morning, and how callous the reporter was for calling it a suicide because other, more credible news reports are calling it a "medical emergency." I think his PR folks released that after the tabloids got the story first. Exhaustion and dehydration? How will they explain the scars he will have if it is indeed a suicide attempt?
That said, it makes me sad, because I think he's funny. I loved him in Zoolander and he was pretty funny in You, Me and Dupree (even though that movie sucked). I wish him the best and hope he gets the help he needs.

They refused to comment when immediately reached -- which, we've had reps make up b.s. excuses for anything/everything lately and then the whole "let me heal in peace" statement. It's sad and of itself and it's also sad that mental illness/depression are so stigmatized that we have celebs driving drunk/running over pedestrians/making racist comments and the media wants to be cautious and silent about this. I understand not wanting to say something untrue, but better it gets addressed and he gets the help he needs than it being ignored.
Also - I think any mention of Kate is giving her way too much credit. She's Kate Hudson! She's a non-entity!

I'm just glad he didn't succeed. Loved him in Bottle Rocket. "I'm gonna call my gang! Ca-caw! Ca-caw!"

I just meant that there are a few references to Kate Hudson in this thread - I don't know if any media stories have said anything.

CNN just ran the story--they were very careful to report the facts without any mention of possible suicide attempt. They did run Owen's statement and they had video of Andrew and Luke leaving Cedars-Sinai late last night, after Owen was supposedly transferred there. They gave enough info for folks to read between the lines, though--they mentioned that paramedics responded to a 911 medical emergency call and then talked about the transfer from the first hospital to C-S.

WestEndGirl, I think it's normal for people to wonder whether despair over a breakup -- or any other traumatic event -- could have contributed to someone's state of mind before a suicide, but I don't think anyone here would ever blame the despairing person's boyfriend, girlfriend, or ex. I'm really sorry to hear that you lost someone you loved and were then subjected to that kind of treatment.

I just meant that there are a few references to Kate Hudson in this thread - I don't know if any media stories have said anything. I hope the media doesn't start speculating that the Hudson breakup had anything to do with it. Years ago a friend's cousin broke up with her boyfriend and the boyfriend promptly killed himself. The cousin was in serious therapy for quite a while to deal with this. "That Hansel is so hot right now" jumps into my head whenever I see pictures of him. And I liked The Haunting (that should go in Unpopular Movie Opinions, actually) mainly because of him. The scene where he's roaming the winding hallways in the middle of the night and unexpectedly bumps into the doctor, scaring the bejesus out of both of them? It was amazing how he managed make a lengthy scene of him simply trying to catch his breath funny.
