This E! Online story (which is really just gossip and speculation) seems to give the breakup with Kate as a possible reason for the attempt:

A source tells E! Online’s Planet Gossip Show cohost Tina Dirmann that the Kate Hudson breakup hit Owen really hard and he seemed to "fall into a funk" afterward. "In fact, we weren't even sure if that's why he seemed kind of down, because he just didn't open up," says the source. "But we assumed it was part of whatever he was dealing with, because that's when he seemed to kind of change."

Owen's absence was also noted around town. "He's been basically MIA all summer long," says Dirmann. Some of this can be chalked up to a recent trip to Saint-Tropez, but even while he was in L.A., Owen kept a low profile—skipping the Malibu beach scene and parties that were attended by his brother Luke.

Whatever happened, we wish him the best and hope to see him on his feet soon.

I really hope that the media doesn't turn this into a "Kate drove Owen to suicide!" story, because that is not fair to either one of them.

Could this have been a combination of things? Sounds like depression for one, it's hard to believe this would all be over Kate.. But then stranger things have happened.

Yeah, this is a case where similar timing doesn't necessarily mean cause and effect... if he was in a true downward spiral, of COURSE he wouldn't have been able to sustain a relationship. (And, er, did anyone actually expect it to last very long in the first place?)

Poor Owen. I hope he can heal. This is just a sad situation, no snark from me.

Wow. No snark from me either. Poor guy. It is bad enough to be this depressed but I think it will be worse once it gets smeared all over the media (and we know it will). Even if it's done with a sympathetic bent, it will still be unwanted attention he doesn't need right now. I hope he has good friends and family support and can overcome this.

Even *if* that was true that's a really shitty thing for E to write. I don't like Kate Hudson (at all) but, really, implying that their breakup lead to this is really irresponsible and unfair. It might have contributed to his overall funk but depression can be triggered by just about anything - there's no need to cast blame.

The Insider is making it look like he attempted suicide because of his breakup with FIANCEE Kate Hudson.

They ran a tape of Luke talking to a radio host and the radio host asked him " Are you getting a new sister in law ? " and he said " Yea, Hopefully " . She said " Owen and Kate are getting married ? " He said "Yea, I think so ! "

I feel bad for the guy . I hope he gets it together and doesn't do this again. I'm not a fan of his but I like him and think it's a terrible thing to go thru ( depression / drugs ) .
