*Does* it offer day-care services? For students? That's kind of mad.
(Actually, our high-school had some day-care thingy going on - and an easy class was that when you were a senior. But it wasn't run by students, or for students' kids. Lord knows who would put their kids in there - a bunch of entitled assholic teenagers kind of watching them for an easy credit.)

GHS has sex ed, but it stops after Freshman year. To be honest, once you know it, who needs more classes? I think with day cares in school (ugh), hollywood glamorizing teen pregnancy and perhaps the town itself being so wierd, there's plenty of blame. It's just disgusting.

I don't know why the news is bringing up Jamie Lynn, as if her pregnancy was the catalyst for this baby pact by a bunch of idiot teen girls. From the Time article: Jamie announced her pregnancy in December. And while most articles are saying 17 of them got pregnant this year, I've seen on the news that some of the girls have already given birth. Imagine bringing facts in to a perfectly good "let's blame those Southern white trash Spears' for teen pregnency" meme. Shocking what those Southern trailer trash girls from Gloucester* are up too. *What is this you tell me! Gloucester is in sophisticated, well educated, New England and not in the poor, ignorant, Spears spawing South. But I was assured, reading all about those Southern hillbillies, that this sort of behavior was typical of that region.
How my stereotypes have been shattered!TheJakes, I won't disagree with you that it's unreasonable to blame JLS for the disaster in Gloucester. I will, however, disagree with your characterization of Gloucester. According to everything I heard on NPR last week, it's an economically depressed former fishing town that was devastated by the downturn in the fishing industry. Hardly the sophisticated, over-educated New England city you're making it out to be. It's population also skews Catholic with many of its residents of Portuguese and Italian heritage. Birth control isn't something that's talked about much, and from the reading I've done teen motherhood is not viewed as a life-ending event the way it is by some communities. I strongly urge everyone to listen to the articles on NPR's website. There's a lot more to the mess in Gloucester than JLS and glamorization of celebrity mommyhood. A whole hell of a lot.

I've got Italian family in Gloucester, and just because you hear it on NPR, doesn't make it true. How do you know BC isn't talked about much? These girls didn't get pregnant because they didn't know what they were doing. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing. They thought it was cool.

I wonder sometimes if Jamie Lynn got pregnant to escape her demented mother. Let's be frank, all she and her sister is is a cash cow and I think she subconsciously wanted to sabotage herself so that way her mother wouldn't be able to use her.
Some people can only escape their domineering families through pregnancy or marriage. Essentially running away with someone.

Whatever happened to the BI that the real father of the baby is an older producer type from Nickelodeon?

It's funny you should mention that because I find it interesting that Jamie Lynn didn't stay in Hollywood after she announced her pregnancy. She took the cash from the OK magazine exclusive, her salary from Zoey 101, purchased a modest home near her hometown, and is really just living a regular life for the most part. She never seemed invested in becoming the next Britney, and after she saw her sister go off the deep end, maybe she thought getting pregnant would be a good way to divorce herself from her fame and money hungry mother.

It would be better if she had a full name like Madeline, because she will spend the rest of her life being asked "What's your full name?", but still Maddie isn't that bad. I was expecting a lot worse, considering Jamie Lynn is so young and also a Spears. I was expecting some super-trendy name with a mangled spelling that made it eleven letters long. I hope Lynne keeps her claws off this baby and we don't see "pop sensation Maddie Spears-Aldridge" posing semi-nude on a magazine in 15 years. I'm sure Lynne is already dreaming of that day. I hate Lynne. I read this morning ( source) that Maddie is short for Madeline and is named for the chief character in the Madeline books. It was JL's favorite as a child and she always wanted to name a child after that character. But you know what is even more interesting about that? It means that someone in the Spears family can read! /snark

There's hope for Maddie yet.
Is JLS living with Casey? Or are they both staying with Lynne at her mansion?
