I have come to the conclusion that any charisma and on-screen presence that Samuel L. Jackson may have is derived from his potty mouth. Because he was so blah in this movie. Maybe if George had allowed him to yell out a "Shut the fuck up, bitch!" to Anakin or Palpatine, he would have actually registered on the screen. As it is, both he and Natalie Portman should be embarassed to have been out-emoted by a puppet. Got to agree there. At the end of ATOC I wish wishing Jackson would lay out "Why do you try and fuck Yoda like a bitch?!" to Count Dooku (uh, yeah, George, the names...) It sucks that Lucas made the central theme of the Jedi to be emotionaly wooden. If they had more failability as a group I would feel the dark side would be a threat. Since we are again branding Lucas the worst actor's director in history (Hal Warren at least got Torgo) I will again say that Mark Hammil has got a bum rap for the last 30 years. And Leia's metal bikini is sexual ground zero for my generation. ROTS was a rally for the trilogy. Lucas took to heart the lessons he should have walked away with from Episode 1 (better late than never) it wasn't like watching a CGI train set, wasn't pandering juvenalia and no Jar-Jar. I think that's what engendered the heated backlash more than anything was Lucas couldn't acknowledge that he screwed up on Episode I, just trotted out mantras like "It made alot of money" & "the kids liked it." (like a ref refusing to admit a blown call out of sheer obstinance), Jar-jar's reduced role in ATOC felt more like Lucas keeping his creation there just to say everyone told him the character was a fiasco, but he was going to be there regardless. The only thing Lucas couldn't correct was his failures with Anikin's arc up to this film (god knows he will try with CGI!) He and Portman had no chemestry. When he was getting turned out I felt like if his servatude to Watto was more cruel it would have made more sense that he'd be easy prey for the Dark Side. If the Emporer had been hiding his mother from him rather than Ani just never getting around to rescueing her it would have made more sense. And he should have made Anikin older at thre begining he could have found a better child actor, the romance would have had more heft and it would given a bigger sense of him being a harder horse to break. Reading an old Film Threat article about why Return of the Jedi sucked they presented all the missed opportunities (like not seeing ships hitting the still functioning sheilds) I feel like George Lucas has a lack of imagination as a screen writer. All the bells and whistes work, but I alway feel like he could do something more instead of his patchwork of other references.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I noticed that Jar Jar appeared in Ep III, just barely, but one of his appearances was, surprisingly enough, affective. The look on his face during Padme's funeral procession was very sad for some reason...I can't believe I felt sorry for the dipshit, esp. after watching Ep I a few weeks ago and hearing him tell little Anakin that Padme was "hot." WTF?!?!?!?!!?
Hillbillylover, I tried to use the force (HA) to block all of those questions out of my mind, but you have now brought them to light, damn it. The biggest question I had about Anakin and Padme being married and living together...wouldn't the Jedis have been able to sense it?? Hmm....

I think Lucas might actually hate Portman. He's allowed her character to dwindle to nothing and her hair and wardrobe in this movie were absolutely wretched, poor thing.
I thought Christensen did an all right job. He never really captured Anakin the way I think Lucas wanted us to see him. Christensen came across as a whiner when I think we were really supposed to see him as seriously unhinged with a misplaced sense of self-importance. I don't think that is necessarly Christensen's fault, however. I thought he did a great job in the scene where Padme tells him she's pregnant.
Frankly, she was so blah in this film it was hard to get too worked up over her death. The whole "lost the will to live" thing was stupid. I think her entire character should have had a different direction--more like a sister to Anakin versus a wife. I have never really been able to get over the fact that he was a little kid when they met. A cherished sister figure that helps Anakin conceal his wife from the Jedi ends up losing her life to her "brother" once she realizes he's insane and she tries to help his wife and unborn child to safety. What do you think?
As to the rest of the movie, well, it had its moments. I also though the first half was unnecessarily long. The whole Droid army was just gratuitous. The scene(s) of the Jedi being killed by the clone army was really affecting. I thought Lucas tried to wrap up too much too quickly right at the end. But I did go home and put on Episode IV.
ETA: Hey! Did anyone notice that the Queen of Naboo is played by Keisha Castle-Hughes from Whale Rider?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I noticed that Jar Jar appeared in Ep III, just barely, but one of his appearances was, surprisingly enough, affective. The look on his face during Padme's funeral procession was very sad for some reason...I can't believe I felt sorry for the dipshit, Ok, I LOL at this. Too funny. Were you in my theater? This happened where I saw it, too. I loved this movie. Loved it. Except the Anakin/Padme scenes, of course. I don't mind cheesy movie moments, but the actors need to be able to pull of the cheese. The OT was cheesy goodness, but HF, CF and MH pulled it off. Hayden was pretty good, but Natalie, not so much. NP just seemed so bored with the whole thing. That's the impression that I got. Too bad GL couldn’t have pulled a Peter Jackson w/ LOTR and just filmed all three movies at once. Maybe she would have been better banging them out all at once rather than having to go back year after year to do the same character. The rest of the movie was terrific. The Obi-Wan/Anakin scenes reinforced what OB1 says in the OT "Anakin was a good friend." Until the end of course. It was very chilling and effective seeing Anakin/Vader killing the younglings and force-choking Padme. I'm glad Lucas didn't pussy out in that respect. It jives more with the Vader we see in Ep IV. I'm sorry to get all fan girly here, but Christ on a stick Hayden was FUCKING hot in this flick. Did anyone catch those abs of his when he got up from bed after having the first nightmare? Those couldn't have been CGI! He went from girly-man cute in ATOC to sex god in ROTS. I guess I'm going to hell thinking Evil!Anakin was sex on a stick, but he was. One thing that bugged: In Ep IV, Leia tells Luke she remembers her “real” mother a little bit. She says she remembers her being beautiful and sad. How can Leia remember this when Padme croaks right after the twins are birthed? I keep trying to fanwank it, like maybe she’s describing her adoptive mother. But, having read a lot the EU, she knew she was adopted. Did Bail tell her these things and she’s projecting? Or what? GL fucked up on that one. I didn’t mind the way Padme died. (of a broken heart). It does seem weak, she had her kids to live for and all. But I didn’t mind seeing her go out in a moment of weakness. It kind of represents the death of the Republic in a way. No one was strong enough to stop Palpatine/Sidious. And it’s so very ironic that Anakin, so desperate to save her from her death, is the one that actually causes it.The lightsaber duels were freaking awesome. ETA: I know many fans hate the prequels. I, for one, enjoyed them. I did watch ROTJ last night. After seeing the prequels, ROTS in particular, it puts the OT in a whole new bittersweet light. Anakin/Vader's redemption (saving Luke from the Emperor) is particularly powerful.

As been said here, she's written very unevenly. Even her death at the end didn't fit with anything else we'd seen of her. She's supposed to be intelligent and strong willed. She was elected queen at the age of fourteen. She's five-ten years Anakin's senior. I don't think GL had any idea what to do with her character. He needed a mother for the twins and just kinda wrote Padme to fit the plot points he needed. Well, it can work, in that I think she was intelligent, when it came to things like politics, ruling, government, etc. But when it came to LIFE itself, she was too sheltered and naive.

AMEN SISTER. I was w/ my little brother, who scowls every time I praddle on about my latest favorite hottie, and I knew if I was like, DAMN in the middle of a SW movie, he'd have my head. I've been a little obsessed w/ him since. I hear he put on 30 lbs. of bulk for the role. Me LIKEY!
MAYBE Leia could remember her "real" mother because she has Jedi forces and doesn't realize it and can see into the past and uses her powers that she doesn't realize she has and and and pqiuyajperhjpa9ehpj
WOW my brain just overloaded.

Barely have anything extra to add that hasn't been said, other than that I've seen it twice and like it lots. I put it on a par with AOTC but I know I'm in a small minority who actually liked that one. Still, none of them compare with the OT, especially in some of the god-awful acting and dialogue. The "I love you! No, I love you more! Nooo, I love you more! Noooo, I love you more!" scene almost made me choke on my BunchaCrunch pieces.
And poor Natalie Portman, who not only >>>is given nothing to do throughout the movie, but doesn't even get to have a decent death scene. On the other hand, childbirth doesn't look that hard to do. Lost her will to live?!? <<<
Also, because of complaints over the non-dramatic death of Boba Fett in ROTJ, I was expecting a better death scene for >>>Mace Windu. His death seemed too anti-climatic for being the BadAss MuthaF**ka Jedi
And speaking of deaths, what is George Lucas' hand issue? Vader, Luke, Mace Windu, and General Grievous all lose hands during the course of events? Is there symbolism/meaning there that I don't know about?<<<
R2D2 and Yoda... still Rawk!!! Chewbacca rocks too, but I wanted to see more of my favorite walking carpet.
Dear Mr. Lucas, please make more Star Wars movies. Only please loan them out to others. You have an amazing imagination, so just imagine what could be done with the saga in the hands of, say, Spielberg or Tarentino or Scorcese?
Your faithful servant, forever1267
May the force be with us all.

Hayden looked HOT HOT HOT in that scene, getting up out of bed and walking out into the other room . He looked beautiful throughout most of the film . I liked the movie and could turn a blind eye to the things that didn't add up. I remember a scene between Yoda and Old ObieWan ( sir alec guiness ) where OB1 says "the boy was our last hope " and Yoda says " but there is still another " . And OB1 acts like he knows nothing about it . Yet OB1 was there in ROTS , when Padme delivers the twins . I liked the movie and will see it again , if not for the eyecandy , Hayden & Ewan , alone .

Amen to Hayden looking mighty fine. I couldn't understand why they couldn't show Padmé rubbing his shoulder or something and telling him to go back to sleep. Preferably, since this wasn't meant for kiddies anyway, they could have at least implyed some sex was gonna happen. For real, he's sleeping next to you and looking like that? Too damn tempting to let the opportunity go by.
Also, Yoda kicked ass! I thought he was the most adorable, kick ass character.
