huntergrayson, excellent explanation, especially the line I quoted above, which totally describes Beckett's face as he held the coins.
As you said, the movie made pretty good sense to me when I watched it, but now that I'm discussing it, I find more and more things that don't really click. Like, when deciding to convene the Brethren Court, someone (Barbossa?) says something like "the coin has dropped, the song has been sung", which suggests that when the little boy started up the pirate song and dropped his piece of 8 at the start of the movie, that was somehow significant, a call to action/arms of some kind. But now that I think about it, I can't quite figure out how. Hmmm. It doesn't really matter, because I liked the movie a lot and I want to see it again.

LC, I don't the first Brethren Court *** took place that long ago. Davy says that when he came ashore after ten years ago looking for Calypso, she wasn't there. So I think somewhere between ten and twenty years. Davy come ashore, doesn't see Calypso, goes back to the Flying Dutchman, and stops doing his job. Also in DMC we learn that 13 years ago, Davy gave Capt. Jack the Black Pearl. Although Barbossa calls this the fourth Brethren Court so what happened during the second and third ones? *** Actually, I think it was quite a long time ago. I don't remember Davy saying he came ashore ten years AGO, he said 10 years LATER. I don't think Jack or Barbossa were at the first court. I also don't think Jack is not aging, otherwise his father wouldn't have been in the movie, because he certainly does look old. I don't know if it necessarily matters what happened in the 2nd and 3rd Brethern Court - if it was anything important, I'm sure they would have hinted to it. Although, it would be nice to know. I guess it's hard to determine any sort of timeline because we don't know the exact year(s) this movie takes place, except for sometime in the 17th century. Will is supposed to be in his early 20s in COTBP, and I'm guessing Jack is probably in his mid to late 30s. But, I could be way off. We all have our own opinions and ideas, and I think that's one of the things that makes the movies so much fun. The picture someone requested It's sort of a spoiler for those that haven't seen it yet.

Well, I guess it's a signal that the pirates are losing power and are being hunted. I guess he's saying (with a metaphor or whatever) the events surrounding the singing and dropping was significant, not the fact that the little boy did specificially what he did. I don't know. I'm guessing a lot of scenes were cut. Maybe the DVD will explain more. Plus, IMdB reports they started filming without a completed script. Maybe some of the plot holes were originally meant to be addressed in more detail in scenes they thought they were to write and film later, but those pages never actually got written. Sarcasticcheese, you're my new favorite person.

The only thing that made me think that *** the pirates were all present at the first Court of the Brethren was because when Barbossa is describing it they pirates all turn to each other and nod as if they remember it. Also didn't they say that at the first one, Capt. Teague was ordered to be the keeper of the code? So maybet that's when he stepped down as Pirate Lord and Jack became a Pirate Lord? Also I think that Elizabeth and Will are in their early twenties, and that Jack is late 30s/ early 40s. I think Jack is aging normally, otherwise he wouldn't be so obsessed with immortality or finding the fountain of youth.*** And I love your avatar!

Just to add to the Brethren Court timeline when Jones is talking to Tia Dama (I blanked on her name sorry) about her not being there for the date, she tells him she wasn't there because "that's her nature" not because she had been trapped. Also Jones is the one to tell the court how to trap her, so she must have stood him up, then Jones found the Pirate Lords, then they trapped her.
Maybe Barbossa became a Pirate Lord during the time he took the Black Pearl from Jack, and someone else passed him the Piece of Eight like what happened with Elizabeth?
I didn't get the significance of the beginning either. When told about the singing Beckett says "Finally" like he'd been waiting for it, Tia Dalma says refers to the song being sung like it's a super important thing...but other than that they don't really talk about why.

So, I cut out of work early and saw POTC: World's End this afternoon. It was far more entertaining than the second movie - although considering how bored I was with Dead Man's Chest, that might be damning with faint praise. I enjoyed it, but the more I think back on the plot, it starts to feel vaguely unsatisfying.
I have the first movie on DVD, but I'm not very interested in re-watching the sequels, other than to listen to commentary & catch the special features. Someone upthread likened the POTC series to the Matrix, which is exactly my approach: I treat the first film as a stand-alone, and block out the existence of the 2nd & 3rd installments.

I'm watching Pirates 1 right now and I have a question. I'll only move the topic to Pirates 1 for a second.
When they finally rescue Elizabeth, she comes on board the ship and Mr. Gibbs is there. And she acts like she knew him. She goes "oh no more pirates......" then she says " Oh Mr. Gibbs!". How can she know him?
Oh right, and on first viewing I didn't really like or dislike Barbosa. However, now I'm totally digging him ;D . Savvy? heh!

In the beginning when Liz is a child Gibbs is working for her father or on the ship with Norrington, I think. He's the one who tells her it's bad luck to sing the "Yo hoho" song.
