In regards to the brethren court:
>>Elizabeth became a pirate lord by receiving Sao Feng's pirate-lord 'whatever random things we have in our pockets' upon his death. It's easy for me to imagine both Barbossa and Sparrow getting their own pieces of eight. Barbossa probably killed someone and Sparrow probably tricked/stole it from a dying pirate lord. <<
So a lack of explanation didn't really bother me.
I watched the first movie on TNT tonight, and I gotta say, I fricking love this series. All of them. I am not disappointed in the trilogy in the least. I think the weakest link is DMC, but I still fricking love that movie. I want to see AWE for a third time.

I agree that DMC is my least favorite of the trilogy, but I still really enjoyed it. I have to go see it at least one more time in theaters.

BoxOffice Mojo interviewed the writers, and they discussed the pirate song from the beginning. Apparently, it's a take on a pirate urban legend, and was supposed to be a recruiting song of some sort. Which I guess makes sense of its imporance, maybe. Beckett was happy that they were recruiting -- all coming together to fight so he can use the Navy to take them down all at once and the pirates found it important that pirates were being recruited? I don't know, maybe. It still feels a bit like an unfinished plot point.

Eh, for filming without a script, *nothing* should hang together as well as I thought it did.
This film plays hard and loose with the literal versus metaphorical, though. The real pieces of eight versus the metaphoric one, the "song" and, well, most of all, the heart. But I happen to find the last example really kinda genius, obvious as it may be.
Had to add that the beach scene between Will & Elizabeth might be the most erotic thing I've seen in a PG-13 movie in a long time. I was convinced he was about to start going down on her at any minute! So, kudos to the filmmaking team for making me believe that cunninglingus is about to happen in a Disney film.
Many critics gripped about how there's no drama if anyone can be raised from the dead.. My very fast and quick wank on that? For starters, death made Jack go crazy. Like, batshit crazy. Also, some of the dialogue made me think that Calypso was needed to travel to World's End. (plus she's made of crabs and the crabs moved his boat.... So I think that death is now permanent and even if it isn't, it sucks. Otherwise, why would the next quest be for immortality via the fountain of youth?

I agree. I thought there was plenty of drama, and that it was loud and clear that >>Death did a number on Jack Sparrow. He did indeed go batshit, and it was more than clear that he was going to do ANYTHING to avoid that fate again. I also thought it added an interesting character dimension. Certain characters - Norrington, Governor Swann - were not afraid of death. Jack? Is. << For the moment, I'm choosing to believe that >> Will, in his new role, could bring Norrington back from the dead to, say, protect Elizabeth or something. But that's my love of Norrington and hope for a sequel sometime in the future. <<
I saw this again this afternoon and have a few more observations. Elizabeth has twice >> sent Jack to his doom. First, the Kraken, and second, to the Flying Dutchman in exchange for Will. Jack has twice saved Elizabeth, and 'saved' Will at least once. He saved her from drowning, and he hauled her off the ship as the fish people were carving out Will's heart, and then, of course, he saved Will from death by making him Captain of the Flying Dutchman.<< So, in conclusion, someone here owes someone else big time. I was slightly annoyed that Jack wasn't angrier at Elizabeth for the events of DMC. I do think it was still manifested, as many times as he >> called her a murderess and refused to kiss her goodbye.<<

That Box Office Mojo interview was one of the most confusing things I've ever read. PoTC is an embodiment of existentialism? Okay. But I think it did confirm some of your ideas, Huntergrayson. ***I think Calypso being "imprisoned" in a human body did make death inpermanent and reversible, but now that she's released that's changed. And I think the crabs moving Jack's ship was a result of Calypso going "over the edge." Also I think it was the song that called the Brethren Court and not any of the actual Pirate Lords. Like, the pirates knew that they were in trouble, and called the court by singing the song. *** The more I think about it, I think the writers didn't realy plan out all the plot points.

I saw it today. Liked it a lot but didn't quite get all the details of the many, many subplots but I got the general gist of it all. It was better than Spider-Man 3 though!

Everyone's already said everything I wanted to say, but I want to add that I loved monkey Jack. So cute.

I'm really happy that Johnny and PoTC won at the MTV Movie Awards. That and watching Paris Hilton almost cry when everyone laughed at her totally made my evening.

I finally got to see the film this weekend. The coins were a decoy for Beckett. The boy started the to sing the song that was a signal to let the Pirate masters know there was trouble and to call a meeting. He threw the coin as a decoy. Or at least that was what I thought the whole movie. But who knows. Some of my favourite part were when Pintel and Ragetti were going to throw cannon balls on the dead people to see what happened, when Barbossa and Captain Jack were both trying to Captain the ship and at the end when Jack stole the beating heart I love all the little silly things. I loved Keith Richards too. I really enjoyed this movie and didn't find it too hard to follow. I think reading all your spoilers helped. I was just really disappointed that Norrington played such a small role and was killed off so fast!
