Don't worry, you have company. While I didn't hate it (I love my PotC far too much to hate), I was seriously let down and dissapointed by what they did to the characters. And word on the editing. You have just summed up what I feel as well. I just saw it last night and thought the character of Norrington and his fate was just the product of lazy writing. The movie was fine, but nothing too special. All I could think was, who at Disney has the major crush on Kiera Knightley? I can't believe what a semi-minor character they turned Jack into. It really was Elizabeth overdone in this movie. When she was standing on the deck and giving her "freedom" speech I would have given anything for someone to have shot a cannonball through her.

This seems bad... From ONTD (I put the possible plot points in spoiler color):

Judging from their PotC: DMC commentary and their BoxOfficeMojo.com interview, both writers. They seemed rather pissy that Jack/Depp was getting all the attention.
A sequel? Sign me up. I loved all these movies, flaws and all.

Why wouldn't he get the attention? He made the first movie and it was the major reason it was seen, the Oscar nom helped the franchise as well, it gave it a bit of validity. Not just another silly action franchise.

Seriously, you just felt that collective eye-roll during that scene in the theater when I watched the film. And yep, major case of "movie makers having a crush on their leading lady".

I'd rather they didn't keep making these movies and running the franchise into the ground. I liked the 3rd movie well enough but for me Captain Jack was starting to overstay his welcome - the character had started to grate on my nerves.

I agree. Sure Jack Sparrow is a good character, and I loved the series, but the series and the character can get/ is getting a bit old.

I actually read on another site something I thought would have been a better path for Norrington. Whoever posted it suggested that Norrington should have switched with Jones, and that would have been a great character arc for him. I am the final person in the western world to have seen it (mostly because I've been working in other parts) and Cupcake Kid, that would have been seven shades of AWESOME. Apart from Norrington's non-end (I am admittedly biased, as I'm sure my avatar reveals), I loved it from start to end - I had a mind to go down to the DC waterfront afterwards and untie a dinner cruise craft, I loved it so much. Apart from Elizabeth's St Crispin's Day speech, which was uncomfortably embarrassing to watch more than anything else; the other thing that cracked me up was Will's Black Bandanna of Badassery which he was inexplicably sporting when he was reanimated as captain of the Dutchman immediately following the battle - is there a pirate supply store onboard for such emergencies?

Another Pirates sequel. Really? What, the last two weren't bad enough so they're making another one? I see I'm going to have to take the Matrix approach to this franchise: enjoy the first one and pretend the sequels don't exist. The horse, he's dead, people.
