The most recent Entertainment Weekly had a lot of behind the scenes stuff and interviews with the actors and the directors, and now that I've been rewatching the movies, I can totally see it.
According to Columbus, the kids didn't have a lot of on set gravitas and were very giggly, so they would shoot the scenes from multiple angles and multiple times. The adults who played the teachers and whatnot knew the kids were the stars, so when they got big scenes, it often turned into "Who can chew the most scenery."

Something is wrong with me. I'm in serious denial or something. I haven't made any plans to see the movie. It's almost like I'm scared to see it. When I do, that'll mean it's actually finally over, and I can't accept that. And for some lulz, ONTD massive HP gifs post.

Just got back from a double feature of parts 1 & 2.
This will probably be a dissenting opinion but I didn't love it. I wanted to so very badly and for the first 3/4 of the movie it was excellent. The last 15-20 minutes damn near ruined what had been a perfect adaptation. I was totally okay with minor things left out, condensed and changed because they didn't really affect the overall story too much but effing up the ending is unforgivable. Pretty much everything from after Harry tells Narcissa that Draco is alive to right before the Epilogue is, IMO, a clusterfuck. I was literally rolling my eyes and checking my watch while Harry and Voldy were having their completely unnecessary ten minute long duel. I did think the Epilogue translated much better to screen than it reads in the book.
Now all that said, I did love the rest of the movie but the massive screw job on the ending lowers it from an A+ to a B/B-.
Oh, saw it in 3D because regular was sold out. Save your money.

Pretty much everything from after Harry tells Narcissa that Draco is alive to right before the Epilogue is, IMO, a clusterfuck. I was literally rolling my eyes and checking my watch while Harry and Voldy were having their completely unnecessary ten minute long duel. I really didn't like how they did the Malfoys' exit. I don't think it was made clear that they were leaving for Draco's sake. It just looked like they were walking off and deserting.I think the problem with the Harry/Voldemort duel is that for me, movie Voldy has never worked as a villain. I don't know what would've been the best way to portray him, but the choice to have Voldemort come across like a decrepit old man was definitely the wrong one, IMO. I just never felt 'scariest guy in the universe' from him. I also thought DanRad made some weird acting choices in that last scene. He played it all "Eh. Whatevs." so it didn't feel like it was the epic fight of his life.

I've seen the Voldy/Harry fight criticized in similar ways. I thought it was meant to convey that they were finally on equal footing. Voldy was cracking up because he knew he was vulnerable, and Harry knew he (Voldy) wasn't invincible anymore.
The problem I had was the way the movie was shot. (Oh, and this would be the part where I state that I found a bootleg version online and watched it last night. It wasn't great quality, but I've seen worse.) Yates shot an ugly, manic film for the finale. The cinematography that I've come to love was gone. There were so many obvious green screen shots, bad angles, and choppy editing. And my god, the terrible, terrible kisses. I had to peak through my fingers at the Ginny/Harry one. And the most important one: Hermione/Ron was just really awkward. It was badly filmed. To wit: You could hardly see Hermione's face. And the build up just wasn't there. And afterward, they awkward laughed and smiled at each other. It was like looking at Rupert and Emma kiss, and not Ron/Hermione. It was a huge letdown. Percy showed up with no explanation. Fred, Tonk, and Remus were just dead, no fight shown. The grand Molly and Bellatrix duel was maybe 30 seconds and lame. I don't think Arthur got one line. It was just so choppy. Just series of set pieces that didn't flow together IMO. The best part: Dan's much improved acting. The trio was the best they've ever been and the film did keep in some humor even with the battle going on. And I'm glad I saw this at home first because there was 20-30 minute period that I sobbed nonstop through: When Ron finds Fred dead, all of Snape's memories, to Harry's use of the Resurrection stone. Full out crying. And a little sniffly at the epilogue. It was good, but not great. It should have been great. Still going to see it at the theater, and hopefully that will boost my rating, because some things can't be improved by seeing it on the big screen. Damn you Yates!

I'm with you on not liking the duel, ronette. It seemed to lose all its grandeur when it wasn't in the Great Hall with everyone watching. It wasn't clear at all that Harry just expelliarmus-ed Voldemort, and Voldie's own killing curse is what killed him. That's such a wonderful and important detail of the book! Also, why do Voldemort and Bellatrix explode into little pieces when they die? I guess it was just to look cool. But it was stupid.
I think my favorite parts were The Prince's Tale, The Forest Again, and the scene with Harry and DD at King's Cross. All lovely. The epilogue was cheesy but was done exactly like the book, so that's not really the movie's fault. I hated that they showed St. Pancras instead of King's Cross, though. They're not the same thing, folks!
I nearly had a conniption at my midnight showing because we got through all the trailers and then the movie didn't come on! We had to sit around for 25 minutes while the theater people sorted it out. We ended up watching the 3D version for free--the 3D added nothing, but I do like the cute little HP glasses they gave us.

I went to see it in 3D today (never seen anything in 3D before) and to quote that kid in Despicable Me: That? Was awesome. Maybe I just have much lower standards than other posters but I loved it from start to finish. I know it wasn't a perfect translation of the novel but I didn't read it so recently (or have such a good memory) that it spoilt the film for me. Was I entertained for three hours? Yes - in spite of the bad combination of salted popcorn mouth + a very full bladder - all self-inflicted, I know! All in all, I thought it was a storming end to a very successful series.
