I loved the LOTR movies, beautifully made, NOT boring to me. Lifetime LOTR fan, though. But this movie looks like crap. I totally agree; they showed a scene on TV last week, boy did it look stupid, they're watching the sun rise, Kong and Naomi Watts. Something about that movie just bothers me.

Do you think it will be a big box office fight between Narnia and this one? I think both films are going to do really well, but the three hours of this one could turn people away.

I'm not so sure about that. Beleive it or not there are people (like myself) who have no problem with 3 hour long movies. Plus there's the people who loved LotR and think Peter Jackson is God. While I don't personally, I do think he's a very talented director.

Moldy --
I know that Peter Jackson put up half of the money when it went overbudget, which is very, very cool. I think even with the marketing and expense, it will still make money, even if it primarily does so through DVD and merchandising.

I just got back from seeing this movie and let me say, it is awesome, in the full-of-awe-and-wonder sense of the word. I was willing to go right back in the theater (after a potty break) and see it again, and I've never, ever said that about a movie before. PJ talks about he was inspired to be a filmmaker by the original 1933 Kong, and I can see future filmmakers being inspired by his King Kong.
Sure there are flaws (Skull Island has an implausibly top-heavy ecosystem, for instance) but while I was watching it I totally bought into the story, including the relationship between Ann and Kong. It's definitely a big screen movie. I don't think it will be nearly the same experience on DVD. A word of caution-- some of the more violent scenes on Skull Island might be too much for children. I don't think I'd take a kid under 9, regardless of maturity.
Yep, this is my first post, I've been lurking since March and was on FT before that. I just didn't have anything to contribute!

See, that's what made me smirk. I think it was on NBC or something, that clip was played. I couldn't take it seriously...and she's sitting in his paw. I know it's supposed to show their relationship...agh. I never really liked the original, so I'm thinking I won't like this one. I'll see it when it comes on DVD. But I don't think I'll be paying the 10 bucks. I read on IMDb that the estimated budget was $207 million.

Yikes, it had a very disappointing opening day. Only $9.8 million. Ouch.
Though to be fair, Shrek 2 only made $11 million on its opening day (also Wednesday), so I guess we won't really know if it's a bomb or not until Sunday.

Ooooh, burn. Drudge has a link that just says "Kong Bomb?" and the PR people are spinning already - bad weather, not a "geek thing" like LOTR etc. But that's gotta hurt, under 10 mil. I can never feel sorry for movies that have bene hyped to all hell doing poorly. I also know it's too early to write this one off, just sayin'.
PS. To those who've seen it, how big was Jamie Bell's role and was he any good?

Not many people go on Wednesday. But wow. I thought it would do better than that. I mean, I've seen tons of promos on how great it is.
Why do people have to be geeks to like LOTR? Sheesh.

I saw Kong earlier today and didn't feel the three hours at all, it went by quickly and was an amazing movie. Walking out there weren't many dry eyes. I went in thinking it was silly and crying at the end. And hating Jack Black, but that's for another thread. Jamie Bell's role was small but he was very good, he has a couple of good scenes that drew some applause. Kong the ape was fantastic and theres actually some character development to him.<<When Kong takes Naomi Watts to his lair you see a skeleton of another giant dead ape, so his companion died and he's lonely.>>
