IIRC Bertie was advised to start smoking to help his stammer.

I hadn't heard that, but it's not too surprising. Asthmatics used to be told to smoke medicated cigarettes.

I think it was pretty common for decades to be advised to use cigarettes to calm you.
Since this is his thread, it always makes me sad that Charles has said that he wishes he had got to know his grandfather better and what flashes he does remember, he treasures. His life would have been different if his grandfather had lived even 5-10 more years. Of course he was fortunate to have both his grandmothers for quite a while.

In the midst of Kate-gate, Charles met with Baroness Patricia Scotland, and he is noticeably thinner. His suit isn't quite hanging off him, but close.

Oh yes. He looks good overall, but definitely you can see the toll it’s taken on him.

Oh my, he does look peaked.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been a frenzy and detailed speculation over what kind of cancer he has and what his treatment is. Oh, wait, he’s a man so people will respect his wish to keep his medical information private. My bad.

It really is such a double standard (not on this board -- everywhere else.)

It really is such a double standard (not on this board -- everywhere else.) And he’s the Head of State! His health is actually relevant! Kate will never have a role in the government outside a very narrow set of unlikely circumstances. It’s ironic that so many of the gossip ghouls demanding to know what’s wrong with Kate and declaring she’s hit “rock bottom” (real headline) are also women who proudly declare “my body, my choice.” The basic human right to keep your medical info private is not extended to Kate.

That said, there's a significant difference in that they revealed he has cancer rather than just saying he has an illness and won't be meeting with crowds of people. The lack of information for Kate has spurred some of the speculation.
