SiriusXM just sent one of those loyalty events to me, this time to see Lionel Richie at the Hollywood Bowl on July 31st. Why do I bring this up here?
Because Mariah is the opening act.
Surely, she's a bigger star and draw in this market than an artist who hasn't had a hit single since... 1992...? Which was just when she was exploding into super stardom. And now she's opening for him? It's called the "Lionel Richie: All The Hits with Very Special Guest Mariah Carey" show.
I'm just surprised by this. (I also forgot to click in time, and now missed the chance to get free tickets. That would have rocked!)

Lionel Richie puts on a great show. I'm mainly going because I'm trying to work thru my bucket list cause you never know when they are going to go to the big performance hall in the sky.
The sad thing is I haven't bought tickets yet cause I figure they will end up on Groupon sooner or later. Lionel just can't sell out the venues and even though I'm a huge Mariah fan, we all know singing live is not her strength.

I got tickets to this tour, too. And bought them at full price. I think floor seats were going for $350 or something ridiculous like that. It does seem strange that Mariah is an opening act. Even though she's messy, she can clearly still sell out a venue (well, depending on what size it is ) if she put some effort in. I saw her in concert a few years ago and she sounded great and the crowd was into it.

Mariah cannot sell out a venue consistently, even theaters, in the US. Even her Vegas numbers are dropping. Some of the dates for her European dates last year were not great sellers, either. Too many dates, IMO. And don't sneeze at Lionel's lack of singles on the Hot 100. His last album sold nearly the same amount as Mariah's last three combined.
This tour is doing terrible. They cancelled and rescheduled the whole thing due to Lionel supposedly having a preexisting knee problem, but I think it was more do to the dismal ticket sales. The opening date in Baltimore looked to have less than 50% (and that's being generous!) seats sold only a few weeks before the date. Check out any date on Ticketmaster right now. Every date is a sea of blue. I don't know why they booked arenas. And those tickets are way too expensive, even the ones in the upper levels.
Mariah isn't the opening act. She's going to have an hour set in the middle of the concert. Which is probably a good thing, considering Mariah likes to run late. She was at least an hour late to some of her NY Christmas shows this past winter. One date, it was two hours.
Both Mariah and Lionel have Caesars contracts. This tour is actually his Vegas act on the road. I'm not sure what Mariah will be doing, her Vegas setlist or not.

This is the BEST thing ever! I am cackling! I'm trying to pinpoint my fav moment. It's either the dude hoisting her up onto the dancers' backs or the guy who has to hand her the mic afterward

Wow. The dead guy from Weekend at Bernie's was more animated. The dancers are great, but at this point Mariah might as well just launch her "I'll Just Stand Here, Ok?" Tour and be done with it.

The people defending her are saying that her lackluster dancing is tongue-in-cheek because she was never known as a dancer. Um, okay. But I went back and watched the 'Honey' video. And she was a lot more animated. Now, neither of us is a spring chicken anymore, but I think Janet and Madonna can still click their heels with a little more gusto than this :-) Oh, well. I do love Mimi and her no fucks given attitude.

I'm reminded of something Gina Torres said about Jessica's wardrobe on Suits. According to Gina some of the outfits are so tight that she CAN'T sit down in them. I think she even said that some are so tight she can't walk either. I can't imagine why that popped into my mind....
