Okay, walking through a store today, I saw "Essence" magazine, where Mariah Carey was called "America's Most Misunderstood Black Woman"?
Now, not to draw up some controversy, but I honestly don't believe that to be true. I can't think of another one, but I can't imagine that she's that hard to misunderstand, and I think it's pretty insulting (not necessarily to blacks, but to the intelligence of anyone who might pick up the magazine) to say that.
What is to misunderstand about a woman who got famous in her late teens/early twenties, and rode the wave of pop culture, mistaking her own oversexualization for a good idea and going a little bit off the deep-end sanity-wise (I actually kind of feel sorry for her for the whole "mental breakdown" episode, but I think it falls right in line with her emotional immauturity)? I mean, she's a pop star. And when was the last time ANY pop star was so deep that he or she could be misunderstood? Anyone in the public spotlight is easily seen through by the thinking members of the public, really, and it's a shame to see that some celebrities really think they can hide.
