I LOVED IT! I thought it was a great action, popcorn flick and some awesome fight scenes. And I thought Tom Cruise was cool as fuck as Ethan Hunt, yeah the boy is crazy in real-life but I forgot that. Also kinda hot... Keri Russell is my girlcrush.

It had a $48 million opening weekend, which is less than M:I:2's opening six years ago ($57.9 m)! I guess Cruise fatigue is more than a message board phenomenon.
I was probably not going to see this but I hear parts of it are set where I'm from, and I want to see how wrong they get everything.

I snuck into a late showing last night. The theater was packed so I was stuck up front. The crowd was great, very quiet, but overall I didn't get a vibe that they were into it that much, in fact, some of the more 'far out' stunts actually got laughs.
It was okay. Michelle Monaghan is seriously distracting because she looks so much like Katie Holmes. Not enough of Johnathan Rhys Myers lovely accent. And, I didn't buy 'Felicity' as a secret agent, that was laughable.
They borrowed heavily from the first two films and there was also a bit of "Angels and Demons" thrown in for good measure.
I'll rent it on dvd when it comes out, just so I can see what I missed by sitting so damn close.
ETA Simon Pegg rules. I'd have paid money to see a M.I. film based on his character alone. High-larious.

The whole girlfriend/wife plot was pretty unnecessary. I mean, its not like her presence really added all that much. There are other ways to get Ethan involved in the situation other than "They took your wife." It did come across, in many ways, as a way for the filmmakers/CTC to say "Wow! What a catch Tom Cruise is! Remember, ladies. he is hot yet sensitive." That said, it didn't annoy me that much and it did allow for some nice moments but it did make the film seem, at times, like a large "rehabilitate Tom Cruise's image as a ladies man" campaign.
Ooh. 48 million can't be good. I mean, this is the first big blockbuster of the summer and even though Tom Cruise has taken tons of hits, he is still a viable box office draw. The thing is, I bet this film was hurt by the decline of CTC as well as the sheer awfulness of the last M:I film and a less than stellar marketing campaign (watch TC run from explosions and get threatened by PSH - they needed to show that the film was more fun than that, imo). These days, you can't simply rely on CTC and a cool theme song to get asses into seats. The marketing needed to draw in people who were let down by M:I:2 and who don't really care about the franchise or the character of Ethan Hunt. I don't think they did that.
I can see this film doing pretty well overall because, from my experience and other comments I heard coming out of the theatre, the response is fairly positive. I think it will have good word of mouth and it might end up making some steady money for the next few weeks. Still, this might be a sign that it is time to retire the M:I franchise.

I went to see it mainly because of the supporting cast...(hated MI 2, didn't see MI 1), but actually ended up liking it, Tom Cruise included. It's such a shame that he went off the deep end and felt he needed to do all that stuff to keep him as the apple of his fans' eyes, because he really didn't need to do it--I've never had a crush on him or gone to see a movie specifically because of him, but I have to admit he looked really good here and definitely does not look his age (unlike actors around his age such as Brad Pitt or Jude Law)--if he'd just kept his personal life private, he still would be movie star #1...so, all in all, it's pretty sad, and did detract some from the movie, at least for me. PSH was excellent in it, and JRM was very, very hot. The plot was plausible enough for an action movie, without really annoying gimmicks like the face mask thing from the end of MI 2. I don't know that it's a movie I'd watch a second time, but I do think it's better watched on a big screen in the theater.

In the second one Hunt got involved in the whole thing because of Thandie Newton's character, so it's not like the plot device hasn't been used before. I agree they need to retire the franchise, unless they want to reboot it with a Rhys Meyers/Maggie Q. type movie. I'd see that.

I saw this last night and loved it! It was like a two hour Alias episode (when that show was good I mean). My only complaint though actually has nothing to do with the film. For some reason, the theatre I was in decided to set the volume on "DEAF", so, as all of you that have seen it know, it was two hours of explosions and gunshots, so my ears were near bleeding afterwards. I Loved seeing Keri Russel bustin' caps in the bad guys. Me and my mom were like "Damn!!!!". She should do more action movies, because she is definately believable with a gun! *spoiler* It was sad when she died though. It freaked me out when she was like "Thank you Ethan" and then her neck sort of snapped when the charge in her head went off. The way her eye looked after that happened also grossed me out. It looked like it cracked or something. *spoiler* And I didn't think about it until reading here but, Michelle Monaghan does look like Katie Holmes!

Heh. I was so confused/ turned off by M:I:2, I doubt I could tell you what happened in that film - aside from the cool rock climbing opening, the stooooopid latex mask switcheroos and that John Woo shot when Thandie Newton's scarf blew attractively away in the wind.
