I thought he was trying to talk her into pre-marital sex? And that the big shiny bauble was a part of that.

Are Rose and Cal sleeping together before she gets together with Jack? I just watched the part where they're having breakfast the morning after she goes to the steerage party. Cal says something like "I thought you would come to me last night" and Rose answers "I was tired." He also calls her his "wife in practice if not yet by law." For some reason I always missed this and thought they had a fairly prim, proper, non-physical relationship (until his rage issues come out, of course). Now that I think about it, though, he does give her the Heart of the Ocean in her bedroom while she's kind of in her underwear. This deleted scene would seem to suggest that they were already sexually involved, but it seems like I remember another deleted scene where Rose says that she lost her virginity to Jack.

Binky, that makes sense and is what I'd always thought too. For some reason this time the breakfast scene struck me as implying that she sometimes did come see him at night. Made me start to wonder if everyone else had been interpreting it that way all along.
Thinking of it that way adds kind of a funny dimension later when Rose is being very sexually confident and assertive with Jack (posing nude, hauling him over the carseat, etc.) while he is all nervous and trembly---like this is Jack's first time but Rose already knows what she's doing thanks to Cal.
ETA: Thanks for the link, Lallybroch. I noticed that the commenters on YouTube aren't sure about this either! Maybe this is another one of James Cameron's subtle ambiguities (like the death-or-dream ending).

He was dogpaddling away when a steam vent fell on him. No. Seriously. I canNOT stop laughing at this. Oh my God, the original way that Super Mario died in the script was like, 80 million times better. Instead of getting smashed by the steam vent, he survives for a little while longer in the water, then when Billy Zane paddles by in his boat, Super Mario tries to climb in, and Billy Zane is like, "NO!" and Super Mario is like, "Please...I have to-a....get to-a....America-a...." and then Billy Zane points and is like, "It's over there!" and then Super Mario dies. It's pretty much the greatest thing ever.

I also always wondered if there was an implication that Rose and Cal had a pre-marital sexual relationship. There seemed to be hints that there were. It would go along with her character, since it was made clear that she hated going along with the rules.
Get this: Titantic came on t.v. over the weekend. I own the dvd and can watch it whenever I want, but I had to sit through the t.v. version, commercials, bad editing and all. Even as I'm watching it I'm thinking, "This makes no sense... If you want to see it, go pop the dvd in..."
Yes, I know it's not hip to admit to liking it, but I do. I could see it again and again.

Bonsai you're not alone. I did that exact same thing last time it was on TV.
Confession...
I still have the movie poster hanging up in the back of my closet...

I think Titanic Heaven was a dream before she died. I don't think the other people were actually there (well, I don't believe in heaven anyway, but that's beside the point). I think she dreamed it and then died and went wherever she went. I heard it could be interpreted either way, that Cameron did that on purpose. I like to think it was a dream-it fits in with the song, "Every night in my dreams, I see you..." blah blah blah. I vote for dream. I watched the ending last night & the song starts up with those words as the "Titanic Heaven" scene ends.

I don't even remember the dream scene at the end, and I saw it the week it opened.
Who's the guy who gets smashed by the steam vent? I don't remember that either.

Who's the guy who gets smashed by the steam vent? I don't remember that either. Danny Nucci's character--Leo's Italian friend in the film.

The people who really annoy me? The "I have never seen Titanic and I never will!" people. Whatever, go away.
I interpreted it as a dream. I don't think Rose died.
