Heh. Hubby is watching this right now and I keep yelling out snarky comments. "Hey Cal! We all know you want Jack to give it to you good. Bend over, baby!" "Jack! Jack! I swear I'll never forget Jack! At least until I marry a rich dude who lets me live out all my dreams without you!" "OMG! There's like ice and stuff! I think the ship might sink, Mr. Ladymadonna! How will it END?!? Teh HORROR!!" "Hey, old bitch! Don't throw that billion dollar diamond into the sea, you stupid hag! What are ya, senile?" And so on and so forth. Mr. L is not pleased, but I've been laughing my ass off. ETA: Oh great. Now he's switched over to that stupid western with Mel Gibson and his bff Jodie Foster. I think I'd better divorce him.

Bonsai you're not alone. I did that exact same thing last time it was on TV. Confession... I still have the movie poster hanging up in the back of my closet... I thought I was the only one! My poster is now in the basement, but its still up!

The people who really annoy me? The "I have never seen Titanic and I never will!" people. Whatever, go away. I was once one of those people. Until, I watched it only for Ioan Gruffudd. And then I learned to snark. Me & my sister always cheer when Jack (Leo) dies. We're sick puppies and we know it.

Seeing this on television yesterday brought back all the memories of how crazy people were about this flick when it came out. I remember a news show interviewed a woman who had seen it five hundred times. Five hundred times! And it's three or four hours long! I also remember seeing pics of Leo DiCaprio everywhere I turned for that whole year. Gaaaaah.
It's not really a bad movie. It was just overhyped.

I think the funny thing is everyone predicted it would absolutely bomb before it was released. It came out when I was twelve so of course I saw it multiple times in the theater. I cried every time. Somewhere I still even have the book that was made about the production, but in my defense, it was a gift.

Hey, I have that book too!
This movie was #1 for something like 15 or 16 weekends in a row. That's unreal. And nothing since Titanic was released has even come close to it in box office, despite ten years of inflation.

I watched this thing again today. Gotta tell you my cold black heart did get touched by the secondary players. The Strausses, the priest giving absolution, the musicians, the Irish mother and children. The love story is beyond teenager though. It's just pathetic.
And I'm sorry, every other man but Leo is beyond hot in this movie. The Titanic officers - hot. The ship builder - hot. The Italian friend and the other guy - hot. The bad guy - hot. Leo - not so much.
I'm beginning to think that Rose didn't go to Titanic Heaven. I actually think she went to Hell. Why? Because if I died in a tragedy like all those people did, waking up in heaven only to find out that it's the place that killed me would actually be hell to me. Then again, I always thought that she was dreaming at the end anyway so tomato - tomahto.
With all this said, without the massive massive hype, it is a pretty decent way to kill time. Not the awesomest movie ever, but still mildly entertaining.

Because if I died in a tragedy like all those people did, waking up in heaven only to find out that it's the place that killed me would actually be hell to me. Not only that, but Rose lived to be 101, or whatever, was married, had children, had a whole full life, etc., and when she dies she goes to the place where she gets to spend eternity with some guy she knew for four days? I'd be pissed. Having said that, I like the special effects in the movie. The movie would be great is they had just eliminated the Jack-Rose storyline. I still watch it from time to time. It's like saying one reads Playboy just for the articles, and meaning it.

I wonder how the film would do if it was released now. I mean, it came out before the new Star Wars movies, LotR, Spiderman, Shrek, PotC and it's really not like those at all (duh). People did predict that it would fail at the box office so maybe a film like that could work even today against all odds. But it really was a risk, starring two very young actors who weren't too well known, telling a story that everybody already knew and had probably seen in numerous other movies.
Anyway, since my sisters are coming home this weekend we're probably going to watch it (either this or Gone With The Wind), acting like we've never seen the film before. ;D I wonder if Jack makes it this time.

I think if you subbed Leo and Kate with two young attractive actors in their late teens or early 20s, you'd have the same reaction the original film did. I hated the cheesy dialog and the love story was really silly, but I know why it was done. If it was geared cerebrally toward adults instead of emotionally toward romantic teens it would never have done as well. I just read this thread and I was a Titanic buff too, even had a computer game where you had to find certain things on the ship and get them off before it sank (it was a very cool game for its time with realistic interiors and pictures of china, fixtures, etc.) I also have a book from 1912 that came out right after the sinking chonlcling all the stories. I went to the exhibit when it toured, and I remember when J. Peterman sold off all the costumes and the props from the movie. I am not sorry I saw the movie, the special effects were good but it was a cheesefest. I would have liked it much better if it were a true depiction of what really happened, but they'd made that movie before several times. There's a fairly decent one that was made in the early '50s, I believe. I don't think the '90s version deserved to win Best Picture, though, simply because the dialog/screenplay were so lame. Though I will say that I rewatched it not long ago and the special effects do hold up 10 years later.
