Titanic (1997)

Bumping (or should I say Raising) the thread for the new 3D version coming out next week, in time for the 100th Anniversary of the disaster.

I love, love, love this movie, but I was also a Titanic buff when I was a kid. I even had the board game when I was a kid. You play a Steward, who must save 3 passengers, 3 foods, and 3 drinks, then get to the right place on the sinking ship (which sank every time you rolled a 1 or a 6), then move around the ocean and be the first to reach the rescue ship.

It's will have been 15 years this Christmas since it came out. I saw it opening day, having heard all the doom and Titanicgate gloom, and didn't care. It looked spectacular in the trailers, and it had everything one could want in an epic. Drama! Action! Fashions! Thrilling Escapes! Really Really Pretty People!

It's dialogue can be clunky ("Jack, I think this is where we first met" and Billy Zane's Eyebrow saying "Find her!"), but the teenager doomed romance works for me, and I thought Leo and Kate had perfect chemistry.

Having read the entire thread (which has some hilarious and nostalgic quips from fellow boarders), I wonder if anyone else noticed that Jack and Rose inadvertantly cause the disaster. If they hadn't been running from the security after their love scene, they wouldn't have burst out below the crow's nest and made out, and the Crow's Nest officers would have been watching the horizon, instead of them. And had seen what they saw too late.

Love this movie. So tragic! So pretty!

I didn't see it in the theater when it first came out so I may check it out this time around. I wish the commercials would stop playing Celine Dion though, I hate that song.

I'll be seeing it for sure. I was 15 when it first came out and was also a huge Titanic buff, so I saw it three times. I'm also a total special effects whore.

i forgot to mention that there's a Twitter account doing real time step by step actions of the Titanic as it was built and sailed, as if The Captain could tweet back in 1912. It's @titanicrealtime .

Also, if you're in Houston, you can dine like the passengers on board, for a mere $12,000! (Drowning not included)

IRRC, the issue was that the lookouts had misplaced their binoculars and due to the calm sea, no moon and lack of wind, just plain couldn't see the iceberg until it was too late to avoid it - isn't there a line somewhere in the movie about spotting bergs being difficult? Interestingly enough, many experts say that if they'd just hit the thing head on, the ship probably wouldn't have sunk, at least not before help arrived.

I rarely shell out the extra money for IMAX but will for this one as the trailer I saw in IMAX 3D looked incredible - almost like an entirely new movie.

I was in high school when this came out and a huuuuge Titanic buff so saw it multiple times in the theater. Even though there were some liberties taken with accuracy as far as the storyline went I still loved seeing everything about the ship/time period realized so beautifully.

Global TV (Canada) is running a four-part (or maybe it's six parts) mini-series of the Titanic story. Each week covers the same time period - from a few days before the launch to the beginning of the sinking - but it's from the point of view of a different set of characters. The first week it was mainly about a young first class woman who, much to her mother's exasperation, was also a suffragette. She was making eyes at a crewmember. The second week focused on an Irish Catholic family in steerage looking for a new life in New York because "Ireland has no future for Catholics".
It's interesting to see the characters' stories each week intertwine, and to have bits of conversation in one episode fleshed out in full in the next.
Re: the lost binoculars. As they're getting the ship ready, one crewmember comments on how there's not enough storage for everything, and someone says, "I hope you remember where you packed everything."

I'll see it. I saw it when it first came out, on New Years Eve (won't say how old I was, but I was over 30). I'd like to see it in 3D IMAX; yeah, I'll be there. Especially since the last ship I was on was the Queen Mary 2 which is as about as close to the Titanic as you can get.

I can't stand watching people running around in enclosed spaces where they might drown. About 1/3 of this movie is a panic attack for me.

Oh, and I worked at a mall at the time that this came out. Every single store was playing Celine Dion 24-hours a day. *shudder*

So yeah, I never want to see this movie ever again. Though I appreciated the special effects at the time.
